The University of San Francisco has given me the opportunity to be apart of the Public Service Internship Program and to explore the career of Accounting. For Spring 2014 I will be interning at MEDA (Mission Economic Development Agency) in their VITA tax preparation program. I originally sought out this internship because of the hands on experience with accounting it would provide me with outside of my accounting classes at USF. My name is Angelina Lam and I am a second year business student. As an accounting major I am interested in pursuing a career in accounting and this internship has solidified my decision to be an accountant.
My supervisor and another tax preparer
I will be interning at the 3120 Mission St location where we will be providing tax preparations for free for low income families. MEDA’s mission is to achieve economic equity and social justice for San Francisco’s low- and moderate-income Latino families through asset development. The non profit organization began in 2010 and has doubled the amount of tax refunds and taxes prepared in 2013 with 1,954 taxes prepared to 3,812 taxes prepared. The work I will be completing in this internship is preparing taxes and being a greeter at the site I am assigned to.
Week 1:
The first day of training a group of us went through a set of power points to learn the basic tax laws. To be able to prepare taxes we must pass the Tax certification test. We were taught how to interview the taxpayer to determine if all income, deductions and allowable credits are claimed. We were able to practice on the TaxWise software to be familiar with the layout and to know where to input the different information. At the end of the training I passed the certification test and was now a certified tax preparer.
Week 2:
My first day at the site I prepared my first tax return. I quickly learned to make sure the taxpayer had his or her social security card, an identification card, completed the intake form, and if they had any W2 forms from being employed or any other forms. During my first week I worked with a taxpayer who had 8 W2 forms. I was overwhelmed but remained calm and inputed the information slowly to make sure I did not make any mistakes. The client was very friendly and made the experience very positive considering it was my second day preparing taxes. I ended the week excited to come again to be able to prepare another client’s taxes.
Week 3 and on:
Each day I continued to prepare taxes with much more ease. There were some cases where I would need assistance in helping the client. I thought of these incidents as positive learning experiences because in the end I was able to help a client with a similar case on my own. Other difficulties I ran into was the language barrier. There would be some clients who only spoke spanish and I had to work with them slowly to understand. The few days I was a greeter I ran into this problem a lot more because I was the first person a client would see when entering our site. While I was a greeter I made sure each client was helped in a timely manner. I worked with the fellow volunteers in communicating when a volunteer was ready for another client.
My overall experience at MEDA was very beneficial to my major and career path. I have gained experience in preparing taxes and I am now aware of the tax laws. I am thankful for the opportunity that USF has provided this internship for me to expand my knowledge in the accounting/tax field and hope to utilize this experience in my future as an accountant.
