The Public Service Internship Program of University of San Francisco gives me more experience with the non-profit organization. In the Summer 2014, I have been selected to be the marketing intern for the non-profit organization — Parent Education Network. This great opportunity allows me to be more informed about the children education and the learning disability issues.
My name is Debbie. I am a senior in University of San Francisco, who is majoring in marketing. PSIP helps and gives me the opportunity to take what I have learned and apply into the real world. The great experience that working with the organizations that corporate with PSIP gives me a better understanding and more aware of the children education programs.
Parent Education Network (PEN) is a non-profit organization and located at 6050 Geary Blvd. PEN is part of a national system of Parent Training and Information Centers (PTIs), serving South Central, Northeast, Southeast and Philadelphia. Their mission is to recognizes, supports and enhances the opportunities for children and youth with disabilities and their families to maximize their potential.
As a marketing intern in PEN, the work I have been helping are the marketing researches and word processing. Most of the researches I have done so far are the informations about the target audience, what are the changing should PEN do to effectively communicate with the target market, how the PEN website should change to gain more visitors to visit the website, and what level of standing PEN wishes to be positioned.
During my first two weeks at PEN, I have learned more information about the children with LD and what are PEN doing now. PEN now is repositioning the organization, and wants to have a high mission impact while having enough financial impact at the same time. By doing that, PEN is redesign their website, and ready to corporate with other organizations which are also focusing on the children with LD in order to provide more educational help and information to the children or youth with the LD.

July 7th,
It has been a week since I started at PEN. After attending to couple of the board meeting, I have known better about what PEN expecting to do in the future—to create a better place and help the children with LD. This week, I worked on the marketing research about the identifying the ratio of members and non-members, how many joined in each year’s events, invitation of membership sending through LinkedIn. Moreover, in order to make a better website of PEN, I made a sitemap focusing on the topics that what should be formatted.

The picture below is the sitemap I made.
There were lots of work for this week; however, since that USF already provide the knowledge of Excel processing, it saves me a lot of time to make the formal file and excel worksheet.

After finished the sitemap, note, and social media researches. This week, I helped the PEN to reorganize its database. To reorganize the database, I logged into the PEN membership website, and check the membership information one by one. There were like 9,000 members in PEN. While checking the information, I checked the spelling of the members’ names; their membership status and merge the double count person.
In order to have a good restart, it is also important to have the correct memberships database for PEN to have the connection with the members. After working on the strategy planning, I am now arranging the database.

This week I have started to working on the creation of the PEN new website. For each character of the website, like the parent character, information character, and events information character, I typed more detail into each character to make it more maturity.
First of all, I classified the characters of the website according to the site-map I made last week. Then, I worked on the arranging of the booklist that research and set in order of the books or novels that are about the learning disability (LD). Also, I reorganizing the common type of the LD that includes the detail information about each type of LD.
Later of the week, I was working on the research about the branches, affiliate and both of a non-profit organization, I created a few slides to easily expand the differences between branches and affiliate, and the advantage and difficult of both. I believe that the better of decide to use either branches, affiliate or both, the better an organization can clearly know what should they do and manage itself.
The pictures below are the slides I made to briefly explain the differences between branches and affiliate.
