Association for Dispute Resolution of Northern California (ADRNC) Spring 2015

2/23/15 – Introduction

Hello my name is Jennifer Woo, 19 years old, and I’m from San Jose, California. I am currently a sophomore majoring in undeclared business at the University of San Francisco. Hopefully during my time here at USF, I will find what career I want to pursue along with who I want to be as an individual. I believe this period of my life is a time to grow by reaching beyond my comfort zone and taking advantage of opportunities when they’re presented.

So far, I’ve realized my passion is to help others, whether they’re friends, family, or people in my community. Working with the Association for Dispute Resolution of Northern California (ADRNC) has given me an amazing opportunity to incorporate my passions with my business skills I’ve acquired at USF. ADRNC is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that focuses on providing a cooperative option to people who are trying to resolve disputes in court. They do this through mediation methods and community support. Every year they host a conference in order to promote and increase the use of dispute resolution in the broader culture through leadership and education.

My role is to help find sponsors to fund this years annual conference, March 14 – 15. I am in charge of contacting them through email and phone to hopefully persuade them to become a sponsor or raffle donor to advertise their business. Currently there is no office to report to, so I contact sponsors during my own time and I have weekly check-ins with my supervisor. Already, there is  heavy pressure to find sponsors in such a short amount of time, but I am eager to help find sufficient funding for their conference.

3/23/15 – Conference

Recently, I have just completed my internship at ADRNC. I have to say that I learned more than I expected. Not only about what it is like to run a business, but also the how passions make it successful. This experience really made a huge impact on me and I am so glad I was given this opportunity.

The preparation leading up to it was stressful. Talking to my supervisors, I could feel their stress radiating through emails and phone calls. I really felt compelled to do the best I could to make their lives easier. I contacted businesses that I thought would benefit from funding this conference. For example, some local businesses around the location where it was being held at, legal service that uses mediation practices, and police stations. From there I did extensive research and complied a huge list of 150-170 businesses. I contacted each one first by email asking if they would either want to donate a raffle prize or donate money in return for advertisement based on how much they donated. I would wait a couple of days and then follow up by phone. I would say this was the toughest part for me. By nature, I am not persuasive by any means. I would say I am more on the shy and sensitive side. But I was motivated to help this conference happen. It was tough receiving rejections left and right; I had to tell myself to not take it personally. The responses I got mostly ranged between excuses of the supervisors being busy even after calling them when they told me to contact them and flat out “No” and hanging up. You can probably sense some sass and bitter vibes because I have not fully gotten over it but it is the past. After little to no luck I finally got some inquires from a couple of businesses and got my first raffle prize donation. Fireworks shot in my head and a smile stretched from ear to ear while reading that email that morning. I actually succeeded. By this time, we were rounding the corner to the conference. We had decided to change the type of business we were targeting because something was not working. I began to look up other mediation non-profit organizations. My supervisor, Aaron Newman, suggested I contact their sponsors because they would be more likely to support ours because we are similar businesses. I wished we had thought of this sooner. Most of the foundations were willing to provide money, but they required a completed application 1-3 months in advance in order to be considered and processed.

The conference was right around the corner and I honestly did not know what to expect. However, I was intrigued in learning more about mediation because I did not have knowledge about it prior to my internship. The amount of respect I have gained for those who were involved with the conference is overwhelming. Not only did I gained a lot of knowledge about how a business runs and how to successfully manage an event, I also learned a lot about myself as a person. Early Saturday morning, I made my way over to CSU East Bay in Hayward. I checked in with Evelyn Andrews and went over my duties along with the other volunteers. In the morning, I greeted those who had registered by checking them in and giving them nametags and programs; answering any questions as best as I could.

After the keynote speaker, I was able to walk in and peer into the workshops. Most of the day I monitored the front desk to catch any stragglers who checked in late. I had the opportunity to be the designated volunteer in one of the workshops. So I got to sit in on a workshop at the end of the day. This really opened my eyes to what this nonprofit really does and why people are so passionate about mediation practice. This workshop consisted of four very educated lawyers and mediators. The presenter circled around the topic of stories of people in conflict that has used mediations to find peaceful ends. I was extremely touched by their raw and honest stories it prompted me to share one of my own conflicts that has not yet been resolved. This moment was extremely emotional for me and I got to experience hands on support from this cozy group of mediators who were complete strangers.

Little did I know, this was just the start of an inspiring weekend. Sunday morning came fast and I attended a meditation combined with mediation workshop. I was exposed to great conversation that definitely motivated me to stay serious about my academics. Being in a room full of educated lawyers probed my thoughts and interests. Everybody had such interesting stories of how they got to where they are in their life. Speaking with them made me want to have even more experiences that will impact my character. I cannot wait to see what my future holds.

This was a learning experience for everyone, me and along with those who ran the conference. My two supervisors, Aaron Newman and Evelyn Andrews, were new to this organization and had to figure out how to make this conference successful. The major problem was time. The plans for the conference did not begin until December. I learned that in order to plan for a huge conference, you need more time to set the location, to inform more people about the conference, and to get more sponsors. The past years had been very successful with a huge turn out and so they decided to split the conference into two days. But other factors like the moving of locations and late advertising about the conference may have deterred attendees from coming. On top of that most of the foundations I contacted required more time to process your application for a donation. On the other hand this year’s conference was successful for a couple of reasons despite that the turnout was not met and other issues. One reason is that everything turned out for the best due to the fact that everyone deeply values mediation practices. Attending the conference, I could feel the passion and support towards the organization of those who were putting it together. Everyone enjoyed the work that they were doing. Secondly, the individual work of everyone made it flow smoothly. I felt useless while contacting sponsors because no one was replying to my calls or emails. I spoke with Aaron and he told me that I gathered a lot of information that is useful to make the event run even smoother next year. Even though I got a lot of rejections, I figured out when to contact certain foundations and what type of businesses to contact for sponsorship. Even a small role like mine helps in the bigger picture. My supervisor Aaron plans to check in with me to talk even further about what we could learn from this year’s conference.

In the end, I was able to see why people work for non-profits and how it differs from a normal business. I exercised business skills like negotiating, professionalism, and teamwork. Overall, I am so glad I worked this conference. I got to see what my work was leading to and on the way I bonded with other volunteers and board members.

  1. For me, speaking at a conference is always accompanied by stress, perhaps because of the fear of speaking in front of an audience, and I always screw myself up that I won’t get the audience’s attention.

  2. I think that the main thing is that you understand that it bothers you, so you can find different ways to get rid of anxiety. For example, you can learn more about how online therapy can help with anxiety https://us.calmerry.com/anxiety-therapy/ Treatment is available, and psychotherapy or talk therapy is often the most effective option. Anxiety therapy does not only treat the symptoms of your problems. Anxiety therapy gives you effective tools to overcome your symptoms and teaches you how to use your skills in everyday life.

But I prefer to delegate this duty to experts when I need to produce a responsible research paper help https://paper24.com/research-paper-help . But, I’ve recently found myself troubled by dreams of arriving late or botching tasks at work. This issue has worsened to such a degree that I am forfeiting sleep. This served as a welcome relief this morning, being the first thing I noticed after another disheartening dream.

  7. Salutations. I am generally a person who thrives on organization and my list-driven life brings me peace. However, lately, dreams of tardiness or messing up at work have been disturbing me.
