My name is Zihao Huang, and people usually just call be Jack. I’m a sophomore in University of San Francisco majoring in Marketing. I want to get myself into real business world and gain work experience for my resume. By the same time I want my work can help people and bring happiness to them.

The organization active in “Keep Chinatown Clean” movement and organize street cleaning in Chinatown every Friday. Also the services center organize workshops to help Chinese in bay area finding new jobs, learning new skills such like Microsoft Excel for work, teaching elderly person how to skype with family or provide information to low income families how to save money on gas bills. In other words, Chinese Newcomer Services Center is a non-profit organization who help with low income person, and mostly are Chinese. My job in CNSC is to spread out the information to the public by making flyers, using statistics tools to make report from public surveys.

Currently I’m working on organizing the survey we did on the Chinese Flower Fair. It is a survey about How to Keep Chinatown Clean. Many people who had visit Chinatown had complain the health in the area should be improve, so do the people living in Chinatown. We hope to find out what are the needs and concers that people think about health situation in Chinatown. In the past few weeks I was helping Rita to accomplish a report about Keeping Chinatown Clean. The report come with serial surveys including how do people think about their concerns about how to keep Chinatown clean and a survey on how well do the merchants in Chinatown understand about  DPW codes. Kelvin and I were in charge of differnent part of the report and the excel skill I learned in school helped a lot when I was trying to make graphs for result. And Rita appreciate the graphs a lot whick makes me feel great about the skills I learned in class is practical in real life. To make CNSC a more efficient work place, Rita had suggest me to teach a class about Excel every Tuesday and Thursday.   During making the report Rita had talked to me about make a survey on why there are less people coming to Chinatown as vistor. I found doing a survey randomly can be employ in this new survey. This will become my new project in CNSC.

During last month, Rita been announce as honoree for Women’s History Month and she bring us to City Hall for the ceremony. It was such an experience to get into a ceremony that had so many influenced people.

This month Chinese Newcomers Services Center (CNSC) have many workshops cooperate with other organizations. Those informative workshops aim mostly Chinese who many of them do not know English well. Thus the work I’m doing for the last few workdays were translating information we need to boradcast into Chinese. And the following Tuseday I will be helping translate English into Chinese during the speaker is speaking in workshop. I believe those presentations I had done in business classes and public speaking will help me not to be nervous next Tuseday, when I’m working with speaker I do not know that I had only know the topic one is going to speak becasue I had been working on helping to translate the information on flyers.

Currently Rita, my supervisor had been brain strom with me about how to help Chinatown become a more popular space in the city. I gave some suggustions about using benefit motives so all the merchants will work together which we found it is hard now due to everyone had more interest on themselve than on others. I suggust we can can cooperate with some merchants who would like to try out new things and use them as example to encourage others to follow up. For now, a report on what do people think about Chinatown will be useful to help find out what should the position be for Chinatown and I had start working on it.

Tax season just past and CNSC had come to a period that’s not that busy. I had been ask if I can help with teaching elderly peroson how to use iPhones and computers every Thursday. During my work, I had found those senior people’s situation are just like young people at my age and their parents: the parents want to communicate with the kids but afraid of the kids do not want to talk to them. During the technonlogy class, I saw many smiling faces. Not only because they been help, but also they are happy to see they haven’t been left behind, both technology but also younger people, that the younger generation did not see them as a burden. The elderly students like me a lot and they like to ask me questions which makes me feeling happy. Isn’t that helping others is just as helping yourself. But I also feel upset because this reminded me how I treat my parents before, like the sons and daughters of those elderly people, lack of patient to them. I think we both had learn something from each other.

Rita, my superviser, had ask me if I can do an excel class to my colleagues. the knowledge I had learn from Prof. Stephen Huxley in BUS 204 – Quantitative Business Analysis is very useful in work place. I am planing to do an excel class and had made a plan for my teaching. But some other event had run in the schedule of CNSC unexpectedly. Hopefully the excel class can back on schedule soon.
