November 30- In Class Writing

When researching things for my speech to talk about I did not find many ideas yet but am still looking. I think looking into something to do with natural medicine would be very interesting to speak on but I need to look more into it. I plan on recording myself to practice the speech and giving it to my roommates before hand, to nail my skills before presenting. This will help me to work on my tone, volume, and eye contact so my speech is clear and persuasive. First I will start with topic sentences then explain my idea and go into my reasonings, lastly I will conclude with a problem solving idea. Because this speech is online movements and gestures can be hard, but my plan for this is to try and use hand movements to emphasize my points to make them more clear. For the actual speaking part I hope to memorize most of my speech or just have bullets to reference so I don’t just read the screen. This will benefit my voice being clearer and my eye contact being better.

this speech was very informative but also a little awkward. I could feel her anxiety through the screen but that’s relatable. She had research and surveys that were very informative to back her up. The one issue was she said ummm a lot which I get cuz its a bad habit.

When reading Lillah’s response we both focused on how in the real world is were you get a since of reality. It almost is a culture shock because home is considered your safe space. I also liked that Lillah talked about stereotypes. Gregory was so caught up in his stereotype that he got lost in life. Lillah does a very good job of talking about this is a mental health way.

Cultural Event: Covid-19

One event that has impacted my future and everyone else in the world would have to be Coronavirus. The pandemic due to this virus has shut down the world making the next step in life unsure. Covid-19, Rona, coronavirus whatever you call it has impacted our futures in work, school, and more.

Due to this pandemic I am currently at home doing college online. This has been a struggle for many college kids due to the fact of social distancing and procrastination. It is harder to focus at home while doing school because their is no separation of home and school. When being at home all the time I find myself procrastinating more because I am unable to focus at home.

Social distancing has made many people very lonely and sad recently. Luckily I live with my best friends and near my mom but we are still in isolation. Every college kid wishes they could be in campus right now meeting new friends and enjoying the campus life.

When reading Kate Zamos discussion post I had a whole different insight then when reading myself. She tends to use more quotes and example that I would never think to use but they tend to come out very well and bring the point across. She used an example of how people tend to dread public speaking but in the end they are still able to learn how to be an effective speaker. She also talks about the preparation of the speech and how to be successful by writing a script.

When looking into the Forbes article Kate had a very insightful part where she talked about supporting claims in able to show people the pros and cons so they are able to understand the argument more.

When reading Henry’s post I noticed we both tended to pull out examples used in the text to site our evidence. This was very helpful because then the discussion post can be put into more of a real life perspective. We both also used the example of using silence to combat things. Henry did a good job of explaining how silence can be used in an effective way to argue.

Daisy did a very good job of explaining how the introduction is the most important part of the argument because it tells you what they are going to be arguing about and gives you background evidence. I really like how Daisy focused on the structures of the argument more than just the way it is displayed.

Discussion Post:

I read Kate Zamos discussion post. Both Kate and I talked about the main point of the article being cultural identity. The main character is struggling to figure out how to blend all her cultures into one due to the fact she is multicultural.  We also both talked about the isolation and feelings of loneliness that come with this identity struggle.  Next Kate talked about her own struggles with fitting in with her family which was very interesting and nice to hear a real life example. I should of put a real life experience into my discussion too.

Essay #2:

When looking into the comments on my essay I figured out that I supported the argument more than analyzing it. This is something I will work on through my future essays. Another key thing I need to work on is APA formatting. I have been conditioned to always write in MLA so I am very used to that. I recently just learned APA and need to review it and practice more with it so my essays are better formatted. Overall though I am proud of my essay for its context and just need to focus on formatting more.

The blog post I read was Emily’s. We both started off by saying the cultural and language was a barrier but they came together to make it through it. We both also summarized the main points of the story. Emily used a quote in hers to show how difficult it is hard for someone not in their native speaking land. This just proves that they have to work harder to achieve their full potential and excel. Emily’s last paragraph was very interesting to me because she brought up the point of what the world would be like without cultural barriers.

For Essay #3 I am really excited for this problem solving essay. I plan to choose something I am very passionate about and then go in depth to this topic and then research and solve the issue. I am thinking about doing something about human right or political issues currently happening in the world would be very interesting to research.

My Current topic ideas are something to do with public schools, climate change and/or global warming issues, or healthcare.

Addressing free public health care would be very interesting to research and try to problem solve.

I also might write about state marijuana legalization would be very interesting and fun to research.

When reading Henry and Olivia’s posts I can tell that we all got similar information out of the book. Henry and I both discussed how the use of images and text size and fonts can help put out a message or advertisement. We all talked about how technology advancements have led us into it being easier for visual media to present ads.

Both Olivia and I discussed the use of how images can trigger pathos emotion from the audience, this making the ad more reliable. Olivia used a very good example of a drinking and driving image. When you see a car flipped over it makes you want to know what happened and it uses emotions to do so.

Henry and I’s where very similar in the aspect that we used specific descriptions of how ads can be formatted.

For this assignment I decided to choose Kendall Jenner’s Instagram. Due to the fact that Kendall is so popular in Social media she tends to post mostly for the public and not just for personal use. Kendal uses her platform to advertise things such as Chanel and magazines. Kendall also posts her modeling phots and everyday life pictures too. She posts when she travels, has a lake day, or when she atte3nds events.

Recently many people on social media have been using their platforms to educate young voters. Recently she posted about early voting to raise awareness to others. I believe Kendall is who she shows the media but she is also a normal person outside of the spotlight. What she shows is her public life not her private.

Her character development over the years can be shown through her photos. You can see her modeling career grow through her photos and how she has matured. Also she is more into posting what she wants now not just what she is paid to post.

  1. Drunk drivers are involved in more than 50 percent of traffic deaths. Fact because its a proven statistic.
  2. DNA tests of skin found under the victim’s fingernails suggest that the defendant was responsible for the assault. Constructive argument because it makes a claim that can be argued.

September 30- Essay 2 Free Writing

When writing my essay I plan to first find an article that interests me and then locate its ethos, logos and pathos. Normally pathos and logos are easy for me to find because its the logical parts and the emotions of the article. On the other hand, ethos is more difficult for me to find because it is the character that is in the article and this can be harder to detect.

The hardest part of this essay will be finding an article that I will be able to write three to four pages on. This will have to be a long and interesting article so I do not get bored and repeat myself.

Outline:

Check New York Times for a good interesting article

Summarize the articles main point

Find and discuss ethos

Find and discuss logos

Find and discuss pathos

Talk about the style and tone of the article

Conclude with things they could make it better with
