Sustainable Success: Industry Leaders That Are Changing The World
In today’s entrepreneurial landscape with a focus on sustainability, there is a growing concern surrounding the impact of innovations on our planet and their contributions to climate change. Often, many overlook changemakers who have served as blueprints for change or are currently changemakers in the industry. Understanding the career paths and milestones of those creating or having created change provides hope, inspiration, and guidance for those who wish to innovate for the greater good. Applying these insights to budding innovators can lead to similar advancements that benefit both humankind and the earth.
The visionary individuals highlighted in this article not only changed the market for good but also redefined what it means to be an industry leader. Their roadmaps emphasize responsibility and accountable decision-making.
We will discuss the careers of Yvon Chouinard (founder & CEO of Patagonia), a leader in sustainable outdoor apparel; Tom Szaky (founder & CEO of TerraCycle), who successfully transformed waste management; and Ethan Brown (founder & CEO of Beyond Meat), who revolutionized the plant-based food business. These founders have demonstrated sustainable success in their respective niches and grew their ventures while prioritizing environmental and ethical actions. Moreover, the combination of their sustainable goals with leadership strategies and qualities proves them to be true industry icons. In addition, all three possess exemplary skills, such as a growth mindset, grit, and a sustainable strategy.
Yvon Chouinard, the former CEO and founder of Patagonia, began pioneering straight out of high school. After becoming a professional rock climber, he became frustrated with the lack of sustainable climbing gear, which instilled a desire to fill that gap in the industry. Despite not having a college degree, he became a self-taught blacksmith and entrepreneur, initially selling climbing gear he made at climbing parks. This eventually led to the formation of Patagonia in 1973. Patagonia’s mission statement reflects their deep desire to help the environment: “We’re in business to save the planet.” Furthermore, Chouinard helped turn his company into a B Corporation, meaning Patagonia is a for-profit company but with exceptionally high levels of environmental performance, accountability, and transparency. Their goal is truly to prioritize the Earth and its people. Over the last 50 years, Patagonia has donated $140 million to environmental groups, used 98% recycled materials for their products, powered 100% of their U.S. facilities with renewable energy, and spent less than $100 million on advertising.
Another leading figure in business for the planet is Tom Szaky, the founder and CEO of TerraCycle. Szaky immigrated to Canada with his family from Hungary. Once in Canada, Szaky became fascinated by waste systems and the unique items being discarded. Szaky, a Princeton dropout, changed the world with his innovative ideas; he was able to successfully leverage the lack of unique recycling and circular systems. While at Princeton, he worked on a project involving earthworms that break down waste into fertilizer, which sparked the creation of TerraCycle. After leaving Princeton, Szaky fully committed to the earthworm-based TerraCycle project. Later, he pivoted TerraCycle into a company capable of recycling uncommon materials such as cigarette butts, pens, and makeup containers. Once processed, these materials are turned into new products like coasters, benches, and other consumer goods. Szaky’s pivot demonstrates his dedication to the world and to tackling waste that is often overlooked. TerraCycle also has a non-profit foundation that has successfully removed about 1 million pounds of waste from bodies of water. This passion and industry leadership have contributed to TerraCycle’s remarkable achievements. Just a stroll through their offices unveils that almost every fixture used in the office is upcycled or recycled, from furniture to decor, proving the capabilities of diverting waste and its benefits.
Finally, Ethan Brown, the founder and CEO of Beyond Meat, has truly revolutionized the plant protein market and sustainability. He grew up on a farm with a hobbyist farmer father, which sparked his passion for the environment. Brown attended the School of Public Policy at Connecticut College and later Columbia University. Before founding Beyond Meat, many of his roles were environmental and sustainability-related, in which he helped create positive change in this division. These included serving as an energy analyst at Powerballad Systems and as Vice Chairman of the Board of the National Hydrogen Association, among others. His passion for climate action, animal welfare, natural resources, and human health contributed to the birth of Beyond Meat. The company has released a fruitful range of products and partnered with retail and food giants to provide plant-based options to consumers. As of 2022, it has been shown that a Beyond Meat 3.0 patty, in comparison to a regular beef patty, creates 90% fewer greenhouse gases, requires 37% less energy, and uses 97% less land and water. This is a major win in a world where animal agriculture contributes 14.5% of all human-generated greenhouse gas emissions. In addition to his work, Brown has received notable awards, including being named to the Bloomberg 50 and earning the United Nation’s highest environmental honor as a “Champion of the Earth.” His combined traits of leadership, sustainable innovation, and problem-solving make him a true environmental trailblazer.
It is inspiring to see that many leaders are already creating environmental change while creating positive change. These executives have developed accessible and unique solutions to the pressing issues we face today. Such stories exemplify the power of visionary leadership. Pairing entrepreneurship with a deep sense of responsibility and vision can clearly lead to economic and environmental success, proving that sustainability can be a viable and profitable business strategy. The lessons learned from these career journeys underscore the value of purpose-driven leadership.
As we evolve as global citizens, the next generation can take some valuable lessons from such career journeys. Applying similar principles of sustainability and ethical responsibility today is more important than ever. The future of a better planet lies in all of our hands, especially in the hands of leaders who are willing to guide us through environmental passion and market disruption.
