In modern society, as transportation develops the internationalization became easier for many countries around the world. The fact of internationalization brought up a great question that, is it important to have a rich cultural diversity in the work or a company? There are many ideas and answers to this question with different evidence. However, having rich cultural diversity can largely benefit the company in some ways. According to Hofhuis(2015), “Firstly, it is recognized that an organization’s markets and stakeholders are inherently culturally diverse. Hence, having a diverse workforce is a valuable tool for gaining knowledge about, and access to minority groups within society (Ely and Thomas, cited in, Hofhuis, Joep and et al., 2015, para.15).” many of the companies are beginning to expand their market internationally, therefore, they are going to deal with people with many different background cultures, and this is exactly why it is very important to have a rich cultural diversity in the company, which leads to a better coping style to those customers with different cultural backgrounds.

IVAN OSIPOV

I believe that Ivan’s mean point in his response is that he feels the same way that the essay tells us about. He explained how he has many different cultures in his blood and he tried the same thing that the author talked about in the essay, try to learn and fit in every culture in his blood, and he ended up the same thing that author also talked about, feeling belonging nowhere. I personally do not feel I am related to him because I am 100% Chinese, and even though I learn about other cultures, I did not try so-so hard to fit in every single culture that I learned about. Cassie Lai

Her reflection focuses mainly on Bich Nguyen’s experiences as a refugee in the United States, on the other Miraj’s reflection has a broader focus, it focuses on all the youth in general who belongs to multi-ethnic families, and the troubles they face in trying to incorporate all of the cultures their family belongs to. One thing Cassie has spoken about that I found really intriguing is the relationship between Ethnic identity and the issue of equality and recognition. (Miraj)

Yongji Zhang

The main idea of the respond is about entering the rigorous tradition. As the people born in a different culture family, the main point to be an insider of the community is embracing both communities. Embracing aspects of each of their home culture rather than denying one in favor of another. (MJ)

I hope that I will not make mistakes when I grow up.
I hope that the family has a few mouthfuls.
I hope that people who love me are not lonely.
I hope that the people I love like me.

They are not much different except for the second one. The second one actually mean “I hope members of families are doing well.”

After a few weeks of being in the University of San Francisco without any people that I had known before, I improved skills of talking to new people, making new friends, and exploring the new cities. Throwing to the very first day I got here, I was very excited about how my new life going to be in the brand new place for me. Also, I was very excited about my new roommates. However, things do not always go on my way. I got to my building, Grillson Hall, and trying to figure out all the new things, such as student ID card; it took me a while to get the first knowledge of these things. Then I went to my floor and opened my door with an excited emotion because I was going to meet my new “living buddies”. There were no people, no furniture, no nothing in my room; I was very disappointed about this brand new life. I went to the target after I figured out what should I do next. After a long time of lonely shopping by myself, I got most of the things I needed and I could think of that I would probably need in the future. I got back to my room with many things, and I started to set everything up, choosing and setting up my bed, unloading my clothes and other things in my suitcase and backpack.

After reading YongJi and Beidi’s post about today’s discussion topic, I realized that we have many similar ideas of the complication of racism. Racism is not just based on intentional actions performed by individuals that are colorism, it is more about what people deeply thinking and those potential thoughts based on what they learned in school, culture, and their own personal experience.

In YongJi’s response, he talked about how the schools in the U.S taught students that racism’s basic definition, and it is simply “BAD”, and non-racism is simply “GOOD”. However, most of the schools in the U.S did not teach people about the multi-perspective of racism, which you can simply say that it is not deep enough about the actual racism. Even though the schools had taught that what is “GOOD” and what is “BAD”, many of the social appearances shows that most people in most times consider “white” as good, “black” as bad, and this is nothing about the color of people; it is just simply about colors. This common thinking is spreading all around the world, which is also one of the causes of racism.

Also, there are connections between all the answers from different people in the class. In Beidi’s response about the topic. Non-completed learning about racism in the school can cause a fact that many people do not know what is the actual racism. According to Beidi’s example, “white will think it is threatened when a colored person walks around front their house. But I trust for this guy in the reading, she will not admit she as a racist.” many white people, but not limited to white, are having potential thoughts about “what is threaten to them?”, however, what those people are not noticing is that this thought is truly a racist thought, and they will not admit that they are racist because of that.

After we read the article Mother Tongue by Amy Tan, I had a basic understanding of how she learned in English within the “Mother Tongue”.

However, my English learning story is different from her. Let’s talk about my background first. I originally come from China and went to high school in Hawaii for four years. The interesting and also difficult thing is that I did not know any other English words besides “Hello” when I first arrived in the U.S. It was a very hard time for me the first year I got to Hawaii, however, one good thing is that I did not have such a “Mother Tongue” on me, because I did not practice and have any background of English. This leads to the beginning of learning a new language from zero, but it does not mean that I didn’t or I don’t have an accent; I did, and I still do have an accent. However, the good thing is that I learn English from zero turns out that I could understand the concept of English from the basic, and as the time goes on, I learned new things to my life in English, such as surfing; I could not talk about surfing normally in Chinese, my first language, right now. All these experience, with my life in Hawaii, surrounded by almost no Chinese speaking people, leads to one of the hardest things to a lot of language learners, thinking in English. I now could think normally in English and also I have dreamed in English too.

My situation is not rare, but I think it is one of the coolest experience in my life that learned a new language from zero in an amazing place that speaks the language.

Passage 1:
A man from the city came to visit a small farm. He saw a farmer feeding pig in a very strange
way. The farmer would lift a pig up to a nearby apple tree, and the pig would eat the apples directly
off the tree. The farmer would move the pig from one apple to another until the pig was full; then
he would start again with another pig.
The man from the city was pretty puzzled. He watched for quite a while, and finally said, “What a
strange way to feed pigs! It’s a waste of time! You could save a lot of time if you just shook
the apples off the tree and let the pigs eat them from the ground!” The farmer looked puzzled and
replied, “What’s time to a pig?”
Passage 2:
A young man was waiting in line at the bank and developed a loud case of hiccups; it got worse and
worse. By the time he got to the teller’s window, he could hardly talk. Then the man handed the teller his
check to cash.
The teller typed numbers into the computer. In a moment looking up and frowning. “I can’t
cash your check,” she said.
The man was shocked. “Why not?” he asked.
“The computer indicates you do not have sufficient funds to cover this amount,” she said. “In
the fact our records show that your account is overdrawn by more than $5000.00.”
“It can’t be!” cried the man, “You’ve got to be kidding!”
“You are right, I am,” she smiled. She started counting out his cash, “You will notice that your
hiccups are gone, though!”
