Article: Why Claiming British Identity Is Complicated by The New York Times

Who is arguing? Three UK-based writers are exploring the complexities of the British Pakistani identity in 2022.

What purpose(s) is/are the writers trying to achieve? They are trying to explain the struggle faced by British Pakistanis to remain in Britain. That explanation includes analyzing the specific scandal, “The Trojan Horse Affair”, an event in which an anonymous letter was released and it outlined a plan to infiltrate public schools. The letter was revealed to be a hoax but it greatly impacted the British Pakistani population in the area because it was made out to be an intended act of Islamic extremism. The British government attempted to implement “British values” in schools and the writers are fighting against that because it has appeared to be more harmful than the government would like to admit. They are analyzing what qualifies as a British value and attempting to expand that idea. The writers are also looking into the source and cause of the letter in hopes to achieve some kind of understanding of this entire issue.

To whom are they directing their arguments? The authors are directing their arguments towards basically anyone, but they mainly intended to reach Islamophobic people. They are also calling out the British government for trying to implement “values” that are doing more harm than good. They wrote this to show that British people who migrated from places like Pakistan are not dangerous and the stigma around it needs to be changed.

Forensic: What happened in the past? The authors did answer the question, “what happened in the past,” because they discuss “The Trojan Horse Affair” which took place in 2014, and explain how it affects the British Pakistani population.

Feb3 Reading Response Discussion

I read Chinaza’s response, and I think that’s really good. She said after she read Pengfei’s article. She is interested in the digital literacy that Pengfei mentioned. In her opinion, digital literacy is really important now in school or life. She said that her mother is an immigrant, too. So she can understand Dipo’s story more. She understands the hardships of the Dipo Flame. She said she liked how the article was organized because it showed the timeline and made the narrative clear.

Meaning of Name Assignment

My name is Zushan Liu.  I’m from China, so this name is full of Chinese culture. First of all, my family name, Liu, has been handed down from my ancestors. This last name means a lot to me because there are so many famous ancestors in my family. During the Han Dynasty in China, my ancestors were Chinese emperors, starting with Liu Bang. Later in The Three Kingdoms Period, Liu Yong, the second son of my ancestor Liu Bei, was also my ancestor. Many people may not believe that I’m descended from royalty, but our family has a family tree with the names and histories of all our ancestors. And this has been proved by a history professor in Taiwan. My name Zushan is also associated with my ancestors and Chinese tradition. “Zu” is from a poem written by my ancestors. Descendants of my generation should add Zu to their names. “Shan” because I lack wood in attributes, which is also a Chinese tradition. Similarly, “shan” in Chinese means fir tree, which is a tall and straight tree. My parents wanted me to be like this tree, upright and down-to-earth.

Feb1 Reading Response Discussion

I read Izabella’s response, and I think that’s really nice. She talks about how we change people’s minds when they are solidified? When your theory is convincing enough, people are open to change. I really like her example about her arguing with her father about Black Lives Matter. She contradicted her father when he was concerned only with property safety and damaged businesses. She believes many people join the protests to find an excuse for destruction and violence. Life cannot be brought back from the dead. Because of this, her father changed his mind.

Can an argument really be any text that expresses a point of view? What kinds of arguments—if any—might be made by the following items?

  • a Golden State Warriors cap
    • Should there be a salary cap in the league? Are these players getting paid too much? Not enough? Should the league raise or lower the salary cap?
  • Nike Air Zoom Pegasus 34
    • Nike Air Zoom Pegasus 34 is an excellent choice for runners at any stage because comfort and durability distinguish them. Moreover, they support your feet whether you are a professional runner or not with a wide fit.
    • Are these shoes actually durable and comfortable? Do professional runners like this shoe the best over others?
  • the “explicit lyrics” label on a best-selling rap CD
    • Are “explicit lyrics” really that bad? Long ago, who really decided which words were good and bad, or “explicit?” Is it still necessary to put this label on songs in 2022?
  • the health warnings on a package of cigarettes
    • How much do you care about your health? Studies show that cigarettes lead to addiction, circulatory problems, cardiovascular diseases, and cancer. These are only a few consequences but thanks to the health warning on a package of cigarettes, some people are seriously thinking about the effects on their life.
    • Are the health warnings necessary to put on the package? Do the people who buy cigarettes read or care about the health warning?
  • a Tesla Model 3 electric car
    • Why do people choose the Tesla Model 3 electric car? There are many advantages to this car such as:  It’s an electric car so it’s good for the environment.  It has a beautiful design. It has high driving quality.
  • a pair of Ray-Ban sunglasses
    • Are Ray-Ban sunglasses the best type of sunglasses? On one hand, they are high quality, fashionable, and can be made for your prescription, though, are they the best sunglasses out there? Do designer brands like Gucci or Prada make better glasses? Are Ray-Bans the most durable and reliable glasses brand?
