NOVEMBER 12 CLASS DISCUSSION

What communication strategies may be more effective to reach out to people that are less privileged economically, socially, and politically?

There is one interesting example from India. There is “street theater” through which NGOs reach out to less privileged villages. In the evening they decide a commonplace and the time in the village and then people come together and watch theater about important social topics such as family planning, education, being financially independent, child marriage. The most important thing here is that they use the local dialect of those people and music.  This way their message is received well, understandable.

We also talked about the NPO named “Doctor’s Without Borders”. This organization consists of doctors from different countries who work all around the world to help underprivileged people who are in need and people going through emergencies/crises. They have offices in many countries, which allows their members to monitor what is going on in the countries and communicate with the people around them. When emergencies happen, the members in the offices in the respective countries are there to communicate with authorities and people in need and are able to be the first responders to give the people a hand.

In Turkey, politicians use communication strategies which is very basic; face to face communication is important for those who live in less privileged villages.  They go there gather around with a group of people and talk to them. They ask their needs and say they will do it if they vote to them. It is a tactical way. I think they are successful because of the way they communicate with this villagers. They need to be understood. The government who have won the elections in Turkey more than 15 years used this method.
