Authentic Audience

on October 16, 2018

As a teacher; It is important to teach your students the importance of having an authentic audience. Creating and building an authentic audience will be valuable to the students, and the audience. By providing students with an audience- it gives them a sense that their work is valued. With the use of digital tools: students can now share their work from all around the world and beyond the classroom.

An authentic audience is not only valuable to the students and audience- it is also valuable to educators and also implements the common core standards. The common core state standards address the importance of having an authentic audience for students. The common core standards “expects students to write for “a range of discipline-specific tasks, purposes, and audiences.”

Teachers can help support students with building an authentic audience for their students’ work. As a teacher, it is important to start with “examining your learning goals.” Next, think about a project the students can create. After deciding what project your students will create, “you’ll have a better sense of who could interact with your students’ final project.”

Here are some great ways for students to reach out to others, to help create an authentic audience: Students can start with familiar faces; continue with locals in your community; reach out to new people; use social media to connect with others for support in building your audience.

Students can “connect their work in the classroom to the outside world” and can bring more “attention to their work.” Students can use their authentic audience to make sure everyone outside of the classroom has a better understanding of the school systems role, and can also use their audience to support the school. Children can share their work online: where people can view their work and they will have an audience.
