November 8th: In Class Activity

Anthony Abraham Jack, an assistant professor at Harvard, comes from an underserved background and discusses anti-racist approaches that could be implemented at educational institutions and harmonize people from different social hierarchies, races, and cultures to live together. He talks about how office hours benefit people who face language barriers, and difficulty in understanding concepts and building relations with the professor at the same time. He provides his research where he claims “each visit to an office hour increases 1.25% of your final grade for that class.”

Secondly, he talks about the financial burden on students, especially individuals who have the low financial capability. He emphasises food insecurity where students are worried about making ends meet rather than focusing on class. “Two out of every five undergraduate students” are suffering from food insecurity, which is concerning as it affects their GPA and class performance if they are not able to nutrition properly. Jack suggests educational institutions should devise a strategy that can reduce this problem as it will benefit everyone.

Overall, Anthony uses appropriate stylistic techniques, and research to support his claims to communicate his concerns effectively and hinge the audience to understand his persuasive speech.
