Kathleen Maas Weigert is a Professor at Loyola University Chicago where she teaches Sociology and Peace, Justice and Conflict Studies. After receiving the B.A. and M.A. in International Relations from the University of Minnesota, she obtained the Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Notre Dame where she worked in a variety of positions until heading to Georgetown University in January of 2001. She served there as the founding director of the Center for Social Justice Research and was a Research Professor in both Sociology and the Justice & Peace Studies Program. She came to to Loyola in 2010.
She has lectured, facilitated workshops, taught and published on such topics as education for justice and peace, nonviolence, homelessness, experiential and community-based learning, and the Catholic social tradition. She is a co-founder of both the Peace Studies Minor and the Minor in Catholic Social Tradition at Notre Dame. A co-editor of America’s Working Poor, she is also one of the authors of The Search for Common Ground: What Unites and Divides Catholic Americans. She is co-editor of Teaching for Justice: Concepts and Models for Service-Learning in Peace Studies and of Living the Catholic Social Tradition: Cases and Commentary. With two colleagues, she co-edited a special issue on CST for the Journal of Catholic Higher Education (Winter 2018) and co-authored the article on “Institutional Commitment to the Catholic Social Tradition: Implicit or Explicit?”
