Hamilton Recreation Center has been located in the Fillmore for over half a century. Physical health and wellness within the African American community continues to be inadequate due to racial barriers; however, Hamilton Recreation Center works to reverse these effects by providing fitness classes and healthy lifestyle advice. Westside Community Services is dedicated to improving the psychological, spiritual and physical health of their community residents. Their clients represent a diverse range of individuals and families facing emotional crises; overwhelming life circumstances; and those experiencing severe and debilitating mental health challenges. Click here to learn more.This website is the result of a semester long project completed at the University of San Francisco to document the hard work done over time by activist groups in the Fillmore neighborhood of San Francisco. Working in small groups, students engaged in the telling of history by visiting local archives, collecting data, conducting interviews, and observing and recording the work of local community partners. This project stemed from the belief that documenting the dynamic history and rich legacy of community organizing in The Fillmore through the voices of its residents, leaders and activists, will serve to inspire and strengthen our shared resolve to build healthier communities, thereby improving access to mental and physical health services, affordable housing, and jobs.
