Here is a guest post from Jacqueline Cao, a student assistant in the Reference Department.
September 6th is is National Read A Book Day! Take those reading glasses out, a hot mug of tea or coffee, and find a cozy seat to settle down in.
Although there are a lot of national days, this one is meant for a special celebration here at Gleeson Library. We encourage all of you to enjoy the beauty of literature by setting some time aside to read. After all, we have thousands of books for you to choose from; whether it is a graphic novel, non-fiction book, or even a periodical. I’m sure that there’s a book out there for you! Check out this list of top 100 books everyone should read, or even navigate our own library’s catalog Ignacio.
School and work can be time-consuming and stressful. We often don’t have time to read for leisure. However, National Read a Book Day gives you the perfect opportunity to remember to take some time off, relax, and indulge in a good old-fashioned book. Try to think of books as an inexpensive method of entertainment and/or education, or even a mini-escape from reality!
There are physical and mental benefits to reading too! They have the ability to improve one’s memory and concentration, and can aid in reducing stress. Check out 8 Science-Backed Reasons to Read a (Real) Book for more reasons to set some time aside and read.
In a world of chaos and disorder, National Read A Book Day reminds us to breathe, relax, and take some time to ourselves.
