The introduction section in the video recording would help appeal to the audience because the introduction contains the hook, summary, and thesis statement. The introduction not only attracts the audience but also gives an insight into what we want to argue. Visual aids that are not only connected to the essay but also images that will highlight what the author is saying about the topic. Outside sources that are reliable, credible, and, if possible, a known person will strengthen the argument. Life stories that are not only interesting or life-educating but also a story that will dive into your topic. Body posture and eye contact will make the whole speech more interesting and doable.

From the first video, I learned to not mention what makes me nervous or anxious because I tend to do that before I start my speech. I also just realized how effective “Did you know” was as an opening. From the second video, I learned some new things about Quicktime. I used it before but not all of the options that are available on Quicktime. I only did voice recordings and screen recordings before. I always wanted to understand how screen recording and video recording works, and the video educated me about that.

“Pearl Harbor Address to the Nation” – Speech by Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

Speech Selected:

• • An attention-getting opening.
    • Greeted and addressed American citizens and government officials
  • An introduction (which includes a thesis statement / proposition of fact, value or policy).
    • Introduced the attack on US fleets by Japan by stating what has happened. His statement is that no matter how much damage they have been doing, he, as a commander in chief in the army and navy, will guarantee that they will try their best to defend their country and people’s safety. 
  • A body preview.

• He talks about the strength of the US and insecures the safety and defenses of the US in response to what has happened in the tragic events of Pearl Harbor.

• Three or four main points (with transitions between them).

1. Acknowledging what has happened and the truth of what is happening between the Empire of Japan and the United States. 
2. Highlighting the biggest issue, especially what has happened “yesterday”
3. Transitioning into what the army will be doing and making it into an encouraging and promising speech

Aristotelian persuasive techniques (including ethos, pathos, and logos) 

• Ethos – He naturally presented ethos because of his status and his credibility. He is the “commander in chief in the army and the navy”. He is also representing many people and speaking in a very formal situation. 

• Pathos – He expresses his emotion of concern and grief on the tragic event of Pearl Harbor with the audience to share his feelings with his audience.

• Logos- Since he has a solid “ethos” foundation, he is also able to present logos because he was there in the battle scene. Therefore, his experience is basically his factual information. 

• A conclusion (which summarizes main points, and ends with a call to action).
  • The conclusion at the end of his speech is that he guarantees the defense of the US and Americans by using armed forces and trusting in god

How does this example help you during the process of creating your own video speech?

This example helped us during the process of creating our own video speech because we are able to see how he structured and organized his speech. We can learn how to structure and organize our own speech.

Today I watched Marc Mero’s motivational 5-minute speech about his experience of how important life is and that materialistic possessions aren’t the most important in our lives, rather what is in our hearts. His speech is really effective because not only was this story personal but he was really passionate when delivering his speech. He explained his experience that it took his mother’s life away to understand how important life is and that we should care about the people around us and that we hold dear to. During his speech, his tone was quivering as he is describing his regret towards his mother because he always ignored his mother. His story not only inspires the audience to take action but also teaches them a lesson through his lesson. This also makes his speech effective. When Mero was able to present a vulnerable situation, the audience can sympathize with what he is talking about but also learn a lesson from his lesson. Not only did he appeal to pathos, but he also appealed to ethos.

I just watched a short video speech by Emma Gonzalez and the speech was on gun control and violence. The presented a lot of pathos and ethos, especially pathos. She presented pathos by showing it through her facial expressions and also her voice. She had a strong, serious but also quivering voice and this really allows the audience to see the pain she experienced because of all the friends and students that have passed away. Not only was her speech powerful, but when she stopped the speech and exaggerated the silence. The 6 minutes and 20 sec of silence not only highlighted the importance of the event but also inform the audience that the time of the silence was the time that students were dying and paying respect to the students that passed away. This allows the audience to understand that not only was one’s life short but the importance of gun control. She also presented pathos by not only listing all of the names of the students that have passed away but also saying what we can’t hear or see what those students would have done on a daily basis. She also presented ethos because she was a survivor herself and had first-hand experience with the school shooting.

I just thought that the silence was really powerful and I got chills when the whole crowd started to shout, in unison, “Never Again”.

Activity 1: For a long time, my stepson, Jonathan, was unhappy to have me as (a) part of his family, for he resents that he didn’t have both biological parents at home. I try to get to know him better, but he would complain that I invade (invaded) his privacy. As a newcomer, I understood (understand) that our relationship will require effort from both of us. It is not enough that I was friendly. Jonathan also has to want us to be friends, and I was not happy with the two of us being strangers, but I can wait for him to feel more comfortable around me.

Activity 2: Anne Marie collects antique bottles and loved (loves) to turn them into works of art. She will buy bottles if she liked (likes) them, but she prefers to find them in (on) the ground. She will find bottles everywhere, but she picked them selectively. However, she has the best luck at construction sites on (an) old farmland, where she spent most of her time. Often, bottles appeared (appear) on the surface after a good rain, but they disappear very soon. She will use special tools for excavating bottles, including a set of brushes. She did not want to break the bottles as she removes them from the ground. After finding a new bottle, Anne Marie will add it to her display case and hung on (hang it on) the wall as an artistic piece (Mangelsdorf, 2013, p. 411).

I am glad that society is slowly realizing the importance that Black lives also matter and that it matters as much as white lives. One thing I am sad about is that people realize this or do something about it, but how about Asians? We are also humans too, why doesn’t anyone ever fight that Asians’ lives also matter too? Do we not matter as well? We are also judged by our skin, our culture, language, and the way we talk. In the first video, I agree with most of the things he is talking about, but I think that he should use more examples than to always focus on “Fox News” or conservatism because one shouldn’t be judged by their race or their belief.

The Holocaust is a significant historical event that has affected the whole world both positively and negatively. Most people would argue that it only shaped the future of the world negatively, which I do agree with, but I believe that there are still positive outcomes of the Holocaust. For instance, this led the world to know that this should not be ever repeated in the present day and the future. It is a lesson for the world to ensure that something as problematic as the Holocaust should never be repeated again. I don’t really know anyone that is familiar or has associated with the Holocaust but I have heard many stories from the survivors of the Holocaust. For instance, the great things that the Ten Boom family, especially Corrie Ten Boom, has done.

Corrie Ten Boom’s family was one of the families that would help hide the Jews from the Nazis. They sacrificed their family in order for approximately 800 Jewish survivors. At the end of the day, their family went to jail and the concentration camp. This left Corrie Ten Boom to be the only survivor from the concentration camp. Throughout this journey she actually learned a very important thing in her life, this was the power of God’s love and forgiveness. This was shown by her sister who was a forgiving person and a person who is willing to share the gospel and love in the concentration camp.

I chose to write about the Holocaust because it is a historical event that has impacted the world but also it was a topic that I am interested in. This is the same reason why I chose to write about the holocaust in my essay.

        How does the intro section prepare you for the argument? How effectively does it frame the proposal or thesis that is debatable?

Yes, Katrina has a great intro section because not only did she mention the problem but also proposed a solution to the problem. Her proposal is effective but it is also debatable.

1.         Does the essay identify a specific problem and offer proper solutions?

Yes, the essay identifies the problem and offers some solutions to the problem. 

1.         Consider the writer’s use of evidence. Is it appropriate? Does the author address counterarguments/counterclaims?

Yes! The use of evidence are appropriate for this essay but I hope that there is more evidence used. Katrina didn’t really have counterclaims, but I can see why she might not.

4. Do title page, in-text citations (modeling quote sandwich?), and References properly follow APA format?

So far she only included one quotation example and it was partly in-text correctly. However, I hope she uses more pieces of evidence and might include more in-text citations. The References aren’t properly cited because they are still links right now.

5. How effective is the conclusion? Does it do more (i.e. reflect on the learning by doing this assignment) than simply restate the content of the essay? How might it be improved?

There is yet to be a conclusion, but I think Katrina will write one soon.

The introduction section is well done because not only was the argument clear but also stated what she is proposing. Though, I suggest Mya to work on in-text citations.

 Yes, it does identify the specific problem but I didn’t see any proper solutions to the problem.

Yes it is appropriate but I don’t really see any counterclaims.

Yes most of them do except some in-text citations.

The conclusion is clear and it restates the claim.
