For our incoming students, registration is just around the corner! The MSEM program has just released some new additions to the Fall 2023 class schedule that we can’t wait to share details about. These courses are being offered in addition to other electives and the required core classes that you can read about in our last blog post here. The variety of classes found in each semester allow students to explore their passions and tailor their time in the program to best suit their interests. So, let’s dive into some of the latest courses that students can explore this Fall!

First up, Environmental Law, taught by professor Aaron Frank who is the Founder and President of the California Wildlife Center and sits on the Board of the Arava Institute for Environmental Studies. This class looks at requirements of state and federal laws dealing with impacts on the natural environment and human health. Legal theory and case applications are also reviewed.

Second, we’re highlighting Restoration Ecology, taught by professor John Callaway who possesses expertise in wetland restoration, plant ecology, and sediment dynamics and has performed extensive research funded by the National Science Foundation, Environmental Protection Agency, and other notable agencies. This course gives an overview of concepts and practices in restoration ecology with an emphasis on the application of ecological principles to understand restoration design, implementation, and monitoring.

Lastly, we want to share about Urban Resilience in Climate Change, taught by professor Stephanie Siehr who is the program director for MSEM and brings her combined knowledge and passion for analysis and action on climate change. In this class students examine strategies cities can pursue to be resilient and adapt to a changing climate. Utilizing a systems view of city functions, the class will evaluate implications for infrastructure, land use decisions, environmental quality, social equity, and public health.

If you’re curious about what other classes can be found throughout the program you can read details on other classes in the MSEM catalog here.
