Mission

The Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship mission is to provide programs that inspire young people from low-income communities to stay in school, to recognize business opportunities and to plan for successful futures.

History

Founded in New York City in 1987 by Steve Mariotti, a former entrepreneur turned high school math teacher in the South Bronx, NFTE began as a program to prevent dropouts and improve academic performance among students who were at risk of failing or quitting school.

Combining his business background with his desire to teach at-risk students, Steve discovered that when young people from low-income communities are given the opportunity to learn about entrepreneurship, their innate “street smarts” can easily develop into “academic smarts” and “business smarts.” Through entrepreneurship, young people discover that what they are learning in the classroom is relevant to the real world.

To date, NFTE has worked with more than 500,000 young people from low-income communities in programs across the U.S. and around the world.

So far I found my internship with NFTE very fulfilling. I’ve been able to learn the different ways the organization has been helping high schools in various locations including San Francisco, Oakland, and San Jose. These include scheduled field trips, educational opportunities, and events at local schools. In the past three weeks, I’ve been able to learn the inner workings of non profits such as how they get funding and volunteers. Most of my work thus far has consisted of organizing files and financial documents as well as preparing learning tools for the students. i look forward to participating in off site activities like the classroom sessions in one of the schools. I’m excited to see the organization at work as well as learn information I may not receive in a classroom.

  1. A great way to begin teaching kids about addition and subtraction is with subtraction worksheets for grade 1
    that use pictures to explain the process. One example of a worksheet would be a picture of 10 flowers in a bouquet. One of the flowers is taken, but four more will wilt if there isn’t enough water in the vase. The student would have to find the missing flower and represent it on a number line. Next, he or she would display the answer. Using number-hopping skills, he or she would have to answer the question “eight minus four.”
