CHANGEMAKERS

AFRICAN AMERICANS IN SAN FRANCISCO WHO MADE A DIFFERENCE

Biographies inspired by San Francisco’s Ella Hill Hutch Community Center murals researched, written, and edited by the University of San Francisco’s Martín-Baró Scholars and Esther Madríz Diversity Scholars.

Celebrated artist Eugene E. White painted the portrait of Supervisor Ella Hill Hutch in 1992 which became the cover image for the Changemakers book released in 2019. Mr. White is seen here in front of the Inspiration murals, painted in 1999 by Josef Norris.

This blog is based on the texts written by USF students from 2015-2019.

The Changemakers project was generously supported by a grant from the Walter and Elise Haas Fund.

Engage San Francisco, part of the Leo T. McCarthy Center for Public Service and Common Good at the University of San Francisco, initiated and supported the Changemakers project as a community-identified need.
