Student and Alumni Achievements

The University of San Francisco, MPH alumna Evelin Trejo, in collaboration with Professor Kelly L’Engle and MPH students, published an article: Brief peer coaching complements daily digital messages for chronic disease prevention among young adult Latinas. Kelly L’Engle, Evelin Trejo, Adam Landeros, Erika Zúñiga Sandoval, Jazmin Jauregui, Susan Yang. Translational Behavioral Medicine, June 2023. doi.org/10.1093/tbm/ibad036

The “Examen Tu Salud” program was co-designed with young adult Latinos, including USF Masters of Public Health (MPH) current students and recent graduates, between June and December 2020. This program was built on prior research the team conducted with young adult Latinas in San Francisco, that investigated health concerns and generated ideas for the “Examen Tu Salud” intervention. The program addresses health holistically and intentionally with messages and support for physical, mental, and spiritual health. Ignatian tradition, values, and pedagogy informed the approach to health coaching and the digital health and wellness messages, through an intentional focus on context and lived experience, action and goal-setting, and reflection and evaluation of progress. The “Examen Tu Salud” digital health intervention is culturally tailored, informed by behavior change theory and health psychology, and delivered peer-to-peer by young adult Latinas. The program is designed as a brief one-month intervention, delivered remotely via videoconference and mobile phone. “Examen Tu Salud” has evolved into a new academic-practice partnership with La Clinica de la Raza to mitigate workforce burnout and increase their well-being.
