“What Every Kid Wants” Response

In “What Every Kid Wants” by Bill Strickland, the author shares his personal story of the interactions and experiences he had with his bicycle during his childhood. In this testimony, he explains how a bicycle symbolizes many things including the transition to adulthood, freedom, balance, and more. I can agree to the author’s perspective of bicycles to the extent that it is a strong symbolic figure to the aforementioned topics, especially because most readers can have some correlation or connection to the author’s point of view as well.
For example, the author constantly expresses the idea of how riding a bicycle promotes the transition and growth of a person and as one ‘steers’ towards one’s own path to independence. He explains that as one learns to bike on one’s own, one both literally and metaphorically moves away from one’s parents. He also introduces the ingenuities of bicycles, explaining that this ‘toy’ functions beyond its original intent of a simple mode of transportation. He admires how innovative the designs and machinery are, as well as its ability to be easily accessible to even children.

  1. Write-Out Peer Comment (Since he hasn’t posted a write-out, I’ll just write it here)
You probably had, in my opinion, one of the best speeches in the class. You were passionate, animated, and articulate. You have a good speaking voice, and a good level of volume. The energy you brought to class that day, showed that you really cared. Your speech was filled with personal experiences, humor, and a natural and conversational tone. And you managed to make it inspiring as well!
