Reflection: S1 Assessment

Honestly, I felt a bit unprepared. I kept blanking outing having to refer to my notes. I am sick but that’s no excuse. I spent quite a long time rehearsing before class and I felt s if that was not enough time. I walked into class with such confidence until we were put to exercise our voice. I suddenly couldn’t remember how my speech went, making me feel really nervous and worried. I went up to present without much confidence which resulted in me being unsure in my presentation. The entire time I was presenting, I felt as if I was literally reading off my paper, which is a pretty bad thing. Knowing that I was being filmed didn’t help much either because that was just extra pressure. As I was listening to my classmate’s presentation, it made me realize that there are a variety of ways in establishing credibility.

As I was listening to my classmate’s presentation, it made me realize that there are a variety of ways in establishing credibility. I did not “formally” present any ideas or strategies that we focused on in class during my presentation. Instead, I focused on how B-Cycles assumed to be credible by having major corporations as partners and going into a deep investigation about how it is not as credible as it presumes to be. I feel like my presentation was not fully set up or explained well so I feel like the audience might have been confused a little. The overuse of the words San Antonio B-Cycle, was actually a mouthful and got me off track. My original plan was to utilize a powerpoint with pictures on it so that the audience could have some visuals to go by but in the last minute I decided not to follow through with the plan which I regret because that was a chance to show the audience what exactly is the B-Cycle and have something to remember my presentation even if it is that pictures.

I really do hope to improve on my public speeching skills. I believe that the video rehearsals are one way to do that because once we finish recording our speech, we are able to go back and see the things we were not able to see because we were so focused on giving the presentation. We are able to pay attention to details that we do, whether that is using the filler words which are umm, uhhh, and like. As well as being able to see if I mess with my hair or fiddle with my hands. Another way to help improve is to visit the Speeching Center. I have never been to the Speaking Center and I am kinda nervous to go because I have no clue what to expect. Another way to improve is to use visuals or a powerpoint that goes hand in hand with my presentation.

I saw many classmates do things in their presentation that I liked. For example, I really liked how Dina used her personal experience in a bike group, that was very interesting because it is something she experienced first hand and that made it all the more interesting.  I think it was Maelynne who used a tablet as her notes which was also creative and she referred to her table minimally which I found great because she was maintaining eye contact with her audience the majority of the time. I also liked how at the end of Victoria’s presentation she challenged us to get involved.
