1st December – In class

Group activity 1

Ronit and I discussed our topics and how we selected them. We shared our main purpose and a few claims that helped in surfacing the outline of the speech. We may need to brainstorm or revise a few ideas to specify our purpose to our intended audience, the class. We also exchanged suggestions on the organisation of our presentation so it constructs into a logical and cohesive speech. I feel Ronit is progressing in the right direction and more exploration into his topic will strengthen his claims.

Group activity 2 – Aaman and Alexandra

  • An attention-getting opening.

In President Ronald Reagan’s speech, he opens it up by stating directly that he will be discussing the tragic incident that happened on the shuttle challenger. As the president of the United States, he is updating everyone on what happened to the SHuttle Challenger putting aside his State of the Union Address and mourning with the people of the US in the loss of the people on the spaceship

  • An introduction (which includes a thesis statement / proposition of fact, value or policy).

This is somewhat a proposition of value as President Reagan says that it is a terrible and tragic incident that happened to the people on the spaceship

  • A body preview.

Reagan discusses how the Challenger crew was pulling us into the future and that it was a brave step for them and we will follow in their footsteps into the future.

  • Three or four main points (with transitions between them).
  1. We are all mourning the loss of the crew member that was on the Space Shuttle Challenger
  2. The crew members were brave as they were pulling us into the future
  3. We should follow in the footsteps of the crew members and take steps to improve and advance the future.
  • Aristotelian persuasive techniques (including ethos, pathos, and logos)

In Ronald Reagan’s speech, he presented a lot of pathos as he was mourning with the world at the loss of the members of the Space Shuttle Challenger. This speech was to remember those that we lost and that we should take after these crew members and be brave. There is an ethos in this speech because Ronald Reagan was the president of the United States at this time and was speaking to inform the nation as a whole.

  • A conclusion (which summarizes main points, and ends with a call to action).

We should all follow in the footsteps of the crew members and take steps to advance the future.

How do you think this example may be helpful during the process of creating your own video speech?
