For this reading response post, I will be reflecting on Rebecca Solnit’s Men Explain Tings To Me.
The first thing that stood out to me from this excerpt that we have covered in class is the idea of credibility. In class, we discussed credibility in the terms of giving a speech and how credibility is gained as a public speaker. Men Explain Things To Me discusses the idea of credibility on a greater level though. In this excerpt of her book, Solnit discusses credibility in relation to gender and the unfair, inherent lack of credibility that women must overcome. It is interesting to hear about credibility outside of public speaking because to me, my credibility is something that is only criticized in graded assignments but to Solnit and many other women credibility is an issue which is debated almost every day.
