David Byrne, Bicycle Diaries: Reflection

  1. One thing that makes Byrne’s experience with Istanbul, and everywhere he travels, unique is his perspective through his experiences riding a bicycle. For example, many of the routes he had taken on his trip exposed him to some aspects of Istanbul most would regularly miss, or perceive in a different way. Examples of this are the multiple cafes he passed by, as well as some old buildings and houses. Also, he uses his bike travels as a way to lead his narrative, mentioning how he rides from and to each location. Although many of his stories don’t necessarily have anything to do with biking, he is able to use biking as a facet to storytelling.
  2. Like Byrne uses bicycles to share his stories of the world through a unique perspective, I too can use biking and other means to tell storiesĀ as well. One idea was to share how I interact with the environment around me, through the means of a camera. Byrne was able to experience Istanbul uniquely through his bicycle, and I am able to interpret and understand the world around me by how I want to capture it in a photograph.
