It was January 17, 2005, and three cadets were training to become police detectives. The sergeant
decided to test they were skill at recognizing a suspect. He showed the first cadet a picture for five
seconds and then hid it. Then he said, “That was your suspect, how would you recognize
him?”
“That’s easy,” answered the cadet. “We would find him fast because he only has one eye.”
The sergeant thought a minute and then answered, “Well that’s because the picture I showed you
is a profile. It shows only a side view.” He couldn’t believe the cadet had given him such a
ridiculous answer, but he went on to the second cadet. Flashed the picture for five seconds to
him. Again, he asked, “That was your suspect, how would you recognize him?”
The second cadet smiled and said, “It would be easy to catch because he has only one ear!”
The police sergeant shook his head in disbelief. Then angrily responded, “What’s the matter
with you two? Of course, only one eye and one ear are showing, it’s a picture of his profile! Was
that the best answer you can come up with?!”
Extremely frustrated at this point, he showed the picture to the 3rd cadet and in a very testy voice
asked, “This is your suspect. How would you recognize him?” He quickly added, “Think hard
before giving me a stupid answer.”
The cadet looked at the picture intently for a moment. Then she said, “The suspect wears contact
lenses.”
The sergeant was speechless. He went to his office checked the suspected file on his computer and
came back. He was beaming. “It’s true! The suspect does indeed wear contact lenses. Tell us how
you were able to make such an astute observation!”
“It was easy,” said the cadet. “He can’t wear glasses because he only has one eye and one ear.”
Climate Change
I agree with Beidi’s responses to the climate change topic. Her idea inspired me of there are deeper issues than just the number of people do or do not believe in climate change. Her first idea is that once a topic, just like climate change, becomes a political conflict topic, it is not just simply about whether people believe it or not; the people in the political conflict will believe and support whatever is “benefiting” them in ways. Her second idea pointed out that believing and worrying about climate change also can relate to the living condition; rich people worry more and learn more about climate change because they have no problem of living, so they are able and willing to get to a larger perspective in the world. The poor people seem to worry less about climate change because they are more worried about their own lives, such as food. This idea is similar to mine because, in the poorer people’s perspective, climate change is not a thing to worry because it is too far from their life, however, just like I mentioned in my responses, once the climate change can actually affect their daily life and living condition, that would be a big problem for them to worry about.

There were many important historical events in the history of China, however, I believe that one of the most significant historical events is that the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949 by Mao. There are two reasons I think this is the most significant event in Chinese history.

Firstly, the founding of “New” China gave the people a peaceful life. In almost every country around the world, a peaceful life is just one of or the most important thing in a country. Nobody wants to live in a place that is full of conflicts and even war, and the founding of the People’s Republic of China truly ended those physical conflicts and even war between the parts in China.

The second thing I want to mention is that because of the founding of the “New” China, China itself got the opportunity to grow economy and develop the technology. This is also very significant because it is tied to the first reason in someways. The people will only get a more peaceful and great life when the place of the country they are living in is strong.

I don’t know much about how my family relationship in history looks like, but in my family, my parents, they have a very fair relationship from what I have seen, and I also have my freedom and right to do and say things.

Unlike what the essay talked about in India, the people follow more traditional power, China is more of a modern society in power, which does not mean that there is no tradition power, just in comparison. Most of the time, men have more power than women, and also, most of the parents want a boy as a child. However, it is very obvious that the men don’t have supreme power over women, it is more about social power. For example, a man has more power in the family if his social power is strong, and the same thing for women. If a woman has stronger social power in the family, she will have the most power in the family.

In Cassie Kai’s response to today’s topic, she mainly talked about how the essay express and how the real situation of education was back in time in China, and the two were very similar. I did not mention much about education in my response, but I have noticed that education played a big role in the online essay. However, it is similar that we all expressed that what we liked about the essay was the historical events and situations, but her response talked about specifically education.

In Maurica Young’s response, I found it very similar to my response; we both liked how Pengfei talked about his personal experience through the entire essay.

Activity 1:

For a long time, my stepson, Jonathan, was unhappy to have me as a part of his family for resenting that he didn’t have both biological parents at home. I tried to get to know him better, but he would complain that I invade his privacy. As a newcomer, I understand that our relationship will require effort from both of us. It is not enough that I am friendly. Jonathan also has to want us to be friends, and I was not happy with the two of us being strangers, but I can wait for him to feel more comfortable around me.

Activity 2:

Anne Marie collects antique bottles and loves to turn them into works of art. She will buy bottles if she likes them, but she prefers to find them on the ground. She finds bottles everywhere, but she picks them selectively. However, she has the best luck at construction sites on old farmland, where she spent most of her time. Often, bottles appear on the surface after a good rain, but they disappear very soon. She would use special tools for excavating bottles, such as a set of brushes. She does not want to break the bottles as she removes them from the ground. After finding a new bottle, Anne Marie would add it to her display case and hung on the wall as an artistic piece (Mangelsdorf, 2013, p. 411).
