September 1 (Group Activity)

Woman claims months of rape and abuse at hands of Taliban husband (msn.com)

Group Writing on the Blog:

Based on your reading of introduction to several types of arguments in Chapter 1 (please go back to the book and find these types of arguments for more detailed examples, if you need them), please complete this as a group activity and write your findings on the blog (first, you can create a Google docs file and work together and then copy and paste the writing to your individual blogs; don’t forget to write your group members’ names on the top of the blog).

In a recent magazine, newspaper, or blog, find one editorial or an op-ed article and examine to see if it makes a forensic, deliberative, or ceremonial argument. You need to analyze the argument by asking these questions:

  • Who is arguing?

The woman who is arguing is Elaha who was forced to marry a “former Taliban Interior Ministry spokesman” who only raped and beat her for the amount of time they were married. Alongside was Elahas’s friend who CBS News used to aid and confirms Elahas argument to be true.

  • What purpose(s) is/are the writers trying to achieve?

The writers are trying to achieve awareness for “Afghan women and girls struggling for basic human rights under Taliban rule.” The pathos displayed in the article significantly sets the theme of females facing oppression at extreme levels by highly political powered men from the Taliban community in Afghanistan who attempt to blur their wrongdoings due to misinterpretation of religion.

To whom are they directing their arguments?

They were directing their arguments toward anyone who can read or listen to her story as well as those who relate to her situation and wish to get help. She also pleaded with the United Nations to act to save her in an attempt to save her life from being taken.

Then decide whether the argument’s purpose has been achieved and how you know.

I want to believe the argument’s purpose has been achieved because of how spread out the article was when I first clicked on it. I also feel like because so many women and girls have gone through this that it will start to gain a lot more awareness to help them.
