I came across a transgender cycling group in Portland when I was looking for something a little out of the box for this project. I figured not many people have talked about sexuality and gender identity in this class yet, so this would be a perfect time to raise awareness. I started off by making a powerpoint of the group and its founder, and then went on to talk about certain definitions and challenges.
At first it was kind of hard to come up with a topic for advocacy and a sense to raise awareness, because I feel as a whole that bicycling in itself is already one form of informatory sport; people ride in order to conserve energy and reduce pollution, reduce vehicle traffic, and health reasons. trying to find something that went a little bit farther than those common themes was challenging, but then I decided to look into something “off course”, and hope that it works out.
