S5 Reflection

I am actually very pleased with how my S5 video came out. It took me two days to do mainly because I had switched last minute what I wanted my video to end up looking like. Originally, I had planned to make my video kind of like me teaching people and my roommate recording me in a classroom, but it was a lot more complicated than I wanted it to be so I resorted to just make it a vlogging style type of video. At first, I was a little embarrassed and nervous to be speaking in front of my webcam and being weird because I never pictured myself being those types of people to vlog I guess, but I ended up really enjoying the process! While watching a playback of my final video I realized that I left out a few things that I planned to say in my outline. Maybe that was due to me focusing more on the visual aspects of my video than content, and I find thats a very important thing to include in my video especially to find a balance. I also feel like after taking the opportunity to get out of my comfort zone and using media as an option for my speech that I have improved in my public speaking and if I had the chance to, I would do this method again.

What I liked about choosing to do an S5 instead of an S4 was taking the chance to do something that is not normally done in a classroom setting because when doing presentations students think of just standing in front of a classroom and talking at their peers. I also like that with videos you can get creative and artistic with it and add effects. I would encourage many other people to try this method out too!

S5 Module

Topic:

Buy Nothing Day

Target Audience:

Teens, Students, Adolescents, Parents

I would like my Target audience to be a wide variety of people but my video and editing style would probably attract more teens than adults-that is if my humor is portrayed correctly

How I Will Maintain Credibility:

I will admit my past mistakes in partaking in Black Friday and include why I would want to take part in Buy Nothing Day. I will honest and candid and maintain a sense so that my audience can trust that I am able to be honest on a media platform. Also in reference to Tseng and Fogg, because technology is a great place to get information and learn I might include website images in my video to show where I’m getting information from and that I’m not making it up.

Basic Outline of What’s Going On:

  • Greet, Introduce Yourself
  • Transition from welcoming students back from Thanksgiving Break
  • Mention Black Friday Shopping
  • Transition from Black Friday Shopping to the amount of trash it can produce
  • Talk about black friday
  • Transition from the topic of trash to how much goes in landfills
  • Talk about how that trash is affecting our environment
  • Circle back around to how not shopping on black friday and spreading the idea can help the planet
  • End with: PARTICIPATE IN BUY NOTHING DAY

S4 Plans

Since I wasn’t at the SFMTA open house, I’m going to talk about the Ted Talk and my S4 plans.

For my S4 Presentation I would like to choose a topic that goes along with the sustainability in the environment and tie it in with consumerism. More specifically I’m probably going to talk about trash and where the trash goes and how buying things cause a bunch of things to go into the trash and how to fix that problem. I plan on making a video and going along the S5 guidelines to do what I’m supposed to do. I’m going to use strange objects like trash (lol) and I’m going to edit the videos in a way that somewhat gives a comedic effect.

The success of nonviolent civil resistance: Erica Chenoweth at TEDxBoulder

In Erica Chenoweth’s Ted Talk she talks about how nonviolent civil resistance is more successful in comparison to violent protests and are becoming more frequent. The way that Chenoweth speaks in the video, she speaks about how she had thought that violent protests/civil disobedience was more successful than nonviolent until she researched and saw the numbers and realized that she was wrong which showed her character and how she would admit that her assumption was false.

Chenoweth also discusses how nonviolent disobedience allows for all people even the elderly, women, children, etc to get involved and is more inclusive and representative, whereas violent disobedience is more physically demanding and more exclusive and I thought that it was an interesting point for her to make.

Overall, I liked this talk and found it informative about civil disobedience. I agree with her points and she was organized in her talk and was formal and shared good points.

Freedom of Speech

The Freedom of Speech video was honestly, extremely confusing and fuzzy the first time around and then I started wondering if the video was a form of freedom of speech or if I was just overthinking it. I also found the part where the guy was talking about freedom of speech and producing action part super confusing and I don’t get it at all (@2:47 seconds)…

Anyways… I think freedom of speech is an interesting and confusing subject. So far what I understand about freedom of speech is that basically we can say anything and are protected from government to do so and they can’t deny our speech, but we aren’t protected from other citizens. Also whatever we say or do that criticizes the government, for example as mentioned in the video a picture of Obama with a hitler stache is exercising our first amendment, but it doesn’t mean that its respectful. I also understand that you cant say anything you want to whoever you want wherever you want and not suffer consequences which means that if you work somewhere, unless you work for the government and say whatever and do whatever and someone takes offense, like your boss, you could get fired and suffer consequences.

Because of this I kind of understand how freedom of speech works and I agree with it and its concept and I’m glad I understand it now.  I think the part of freedom of speech that makes it controversial is the part where other people/citizens are involved and have opposite viewpoint and opinions from you, especially if what youre saying could seem super uncalled for and outrageous and there are other people who could be fueled with anger against you and there could also be people fueled by what you’re saying and want to do something. (I honestly don’t know what I’m saying anymore I feel like my brain isn’t handling this information well. I’m going to end this post awkwardly).

S3 Reflection

screen-shot-2016-11-03-at-3-56-51-pm

After today’s S3 presentation I don’t feel as good about it as I have felt about my presentations in the past. I think the biggest thing that made me feel like I did worse this time was because of the factor that I have been sick and it took over my voice and I was in the middle of getting better. I also didn’t say all the things that I had planned to talk about which sucked. What I felt I did better compared to my last presentation was I slowed down my pace, but for some reason I feel like I finished my presentation under 3-4 minutes. I was pretty proud of the look of my presentation and how organized it was and hoped it would compensate for my voice and how organized it was. Another thing that went well for my presentation was that I still didn’t feel any anxiety and I felt calm. For next time I want to present better by projecting my voice and also trying to make it engaging for my audience. I also just need to prepare a lot more and also try to incorporate something exciting for my audience to pay attention to. There were a lot of good presentations today, I thought Ashley did really good for her presentation she had a good projecting voice and I felt that I was really attentive for her speech and she did a good job at getting the audience engaged with her tone of voice. I also realize the trend in my speeches is that I continue to stay in one spot so I really need to mobilize myself and get out there and move around for the next presentation because its the last one.

S3 Take 3

what went well: I relied less on my write out and i used my powerpoint

what didnt go well: it was honestly really hard to project with a stuffy nose and hard to enunciate

S3 Take 2

what went well: not a whole lot went well this time around. I guess I did try to do something different by using hand gestures and everything, but not a lot of improvement in other areas

what didn’t go well: I rely to heavily on my write out and because i’m still sick its really hard to enunciate and talk clearly so I really have to work on those two for next time

S1 Take 1

What went well: Not letting little mistakes stop me from presenting my speech in my video. Also, although my write out had parts that were written very poorly I improvised and fixed it on the spot as I was recording myself

What went wrong: Because i’m sick and a little nasaly my voice isn’t able to project as much as I would like to and I had trouble saying my words clearly for some reason (SOS).  Also, I relied a lot on my write out and overall, it just wasn’t that great of a recording in my opinion.

S3 Write Out

Good Afternoon everyone, my name is Maelynne Marzan and today, I am going to talk about a potential solution to a problem that persists through our streets of San Francisco; homelessness.

For those of you who don’t know the Tenderloin is a 225 acre area that is home to our rising homeless population. According to ABC 7 News, San Francisco has the second highest homeless population in the United States with 795 homeless people, per 100,000 residents. There are approximately 837,000 residents living in San Francisco which means there is more than 6,000 homeless people here in SF today. This number will continue to grow if action isn’t taken.

This is why I propose to alleviate the problem, by suggesting to help mobilize this population. Similar to my S1 presentation to the beginning of the year, I am proposing the idea of using bicycles to help a population in need in order to improve their circumstances. There are currently no organization in place here in San Francisco, but there are a many different organizations from different cities and states that do advocate to help the homeless. For example there is an organization that originated in Sarasota, Florida called Bicycles for the Homeless, Inc. Their mission is to provide bicycles to the homeless and work through legitimate and trustworthy social services agencies and organizations so that the homeless may improve their economic and social circumstances and their self image.

Another example of evidence where bicycles benefit the homeless is in article from The Modesto Bee called, “Merced Nonprofit Providing Bikes for Homeless”. A man named Matt Hirota who is chairman of an organization called Wheel Solutions is mentitioned and he came up with an idea that provided bicycle repair or replacement for Merced’s homeless population, which would give them the mobility needed to overcome the barriers of poverty.

So in conclusion, if we implement organizations to help mobilize the homeless with something as simple as a donated bicycle in San Francisco, there is a possibility that we can help these people out of homelessness and build a better community for future residents.
