September 29th reading response

Peer response:

After I read about Yuen Shan Wu’s response, we both mentioned that using relevant evidence is important, because it is good way to support out point of view and make the audience more convinced. The example she write about using first person ”I” to talk about the topic are most intriguing me, because It helps the audience to negotiate their minds about the topic and brings ideas to our own experience.

Academic Research Writing: Library Work (writing on the blog):

Transferring information across cultures has often presented difficult and complex communication problems(Warren,2017,pp.1). Especially because of the international character of their documents, not to mention their importance and the recently enacted guidelines for documentation (in the European Union, for example). Advances in translation and attention to localization have gone a long way to improving these communications. But such translation services are expensive, and many small- to medium-size companies cannot easily afford such costs yet want to participate in the worldwide market. Likewise, the advances in localization come at a financial cost that these companies also cannot afford. And a new problem is beginning to appear: outsourcing of jobs, particularly jobs related to technical translation and localization, and while the costs for both are reduced, many times the quality is lower. One set of problems emerging with outsourcing relate to cultural differences between the author and the reader, magnified by adding another culture to the process.1 One solution is to analyze the recipients of the information better, especially their culture, and to develop writing strategies that help enhance the value and acceptance of the information( warren, 2017, pp.1-2)

  • In the article “We have nothing to fear but email fundraising pleas,” published by the LA Times, David Ulin makes the argument that politicians are using fear in their email and text campaigning practices to gain donations from their supporters.  Ulin starts off very casual using a lighthearted tone to ease you into the article, but then begins discussing his point by letting the audience know that as he got a text from Tim Ryan about a fundraising slump, Lindsay Graham was attempting to introduce a restrictive abortion bill.  He is trying to show the audience that he believes that politicians should be focusing on the issues instead of texting and emailing about fundraising.  Ulin then goes back to a lighthearted tone to connect with the audience as he jokes that his kids send him less texts than politicians do.  Later in the article, Ulin expresses the idea that these texts and emails are coming from an aggressive tone which makes supporters of politicians feel that if they don’t donate, the policies they believe in won’t be fulfilled. The author takes the example of his donation to Ryan to support his argument. He is immeasurably superior to his opponent. J.D. Vance, a millionaire backed by conservative billionaire Peter Thiel. The author also points out that asking for help by texting is an effective way to raise some money from the government instead of making them afraid. Despite the fact that Ulin supports Tim Ryan, he doesn’t want to feel as though he is being threatened by him.  Ulin attempts to connect with the audience and make them agree that these texts and emails are going too far and being too aggressive.  Overall Ulin is generally successful in establishing his argument to his audience through giving logical explanations and connecting with the audience.

Description: The political cartoon shows the bad and hospital tool. There’s one reporter who’s interviewing the doctor. Many people suffer from COVID. The people want to get treated as soon as possible based on the picture. It creates a huge impact on people’s health. There are three words under the bed, and the machine is working by seeing the radio waves. The doctor was interviewed because of his high authority, we can see that from his status of standing.

Rhetorical Analysis:

This political cartoon is arguing the message that COVID disproportionately affects various populations. The doctor is shown wearing an American flag top and pants representing that the government is saying that “COVID fatalities had underlying conditions”. The patient who has passed on is shown laying on top of the words “Poor, Black, and Nursing Home Resident”. This effectively shows that the underlying conditions are affecting these populations in the nation. This argument most likely comes from the left side as it is a democratic belief that these populations are underfunded and systemically setup to never push outside of poverty. This then connects to the idea that they will be disproportionately affected by issues like a global pandemic. This cartoon is effective in its argument because it uses the play on words “underlying” and puts the conditions directly underlying the patient.

individual work:

After I read the pauline’s response, we both mentioned that roger’s perspective is seeing an argument from both side, and take the example of different ideas about what to do about the epidemic to support his perspectives that we should be open minded about both ideas, so we’d stand a much better chance of protecting both lives and livelihoods from not only the effects of the pandemic.

September 20th reading response

Difference: After I read the Pranay Prasad’s response, she takes example by contrasting and criticizing of the current national anthem “Star-Spangled Banner with “Lean on Me”, because the  “language of current national anthem is overly ornate and difficult to understand, its score is too British, which means author use logical reason to try to persuade the audience. However, I took the different example that is using different images in ad,which drives audience the attention and make people think of different pictures as the state of the country changes.

Do an online research on any two of the following famous persuasive moments and describe the circumstances — the historical situation, the issues at stake, the purpose of the argument — that make it so memorable:

Puline  Samantha  William

Barack Obama’s eulogy for Representative John Lewis (2020)

Historical context: Lewis’s sheer determination and will placed him at the forefront of key nonviolence movements throughout the 1960s.

Issues: To cherish John Lewis and his conviction.

Purpose:

  • Pay respects to Representative John Lewis
  • Discussed how his work had positively impacted the nation
  • Discussed how hard he had to work to gain the position that he had

Elizabeth Cady Stanton’s Declaration of Sentiments at the Seneca Falls Convention (1848)

Historical context:

  • start of the women’s suffrage movement b/c women didn’t have full rights of citizenship or the right to vote

Issues:

  • fighting for equality of all men and women
    • idea that women should also have equal rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness
    • educational opportunities, labor issues, property rights, right to vote
  • women were oppressed

Purpose:

  • Convince the US that women deserve equal rights
  • Empower women to push for their right to citizenship in the United States
  • Argue that women have been oppressed by the government

September 14th video response

After I listened to the audio literary narrative ,which was recorded by Haugtvedt Andrea. the feeling she can totally be himself and say anything she want to say is most intrigue me  when She have a conversation with a boy in the summer camp. I was also impressed with she can maintain their friendship by sending the message by e-mail for a such long time.

After I listened to the audio literary narrative, which was recorded by Chen, Dian, she’s learning attitude intrigues me. At first, she was struggle with the course-Romeo and Juliet, because she totally can’t understand the middle English in the text book. However, she watch the some movie about the Romeo and Juliet, and then she made the good presentation in the class.

After read the Gabriella Fulton’s response, she also points out the argument: how students and institution can build credibility. She uses the example of Greta Thunberg to support his arguments, even if despite her young age, she has won the recognition of global readers with her correct attitude and facts. but I use the different example that is in the auto industry. Subaru builds on its customer loyalty to attract more buyers to purchase it. Jeep sells rugged vehicles that come with “trail rated” badges to customers who dream of off-road adventures.

I agreed with Janelle Frazier’s argument. She points out Americans employed Asian American to help them to build railroad, because Americans exploited Asian Americans with cheap labor, which Lead to rapid economic growth in the United States.

Ethos: Selina Leem begins her ted talk with a poem. She continues by informing the audience when she was 18 she was at the Climate Change Conference which validates her authority when speaking about climate change. She tells the audience how she is from the Marshall islands and speaks about how climate change affects her in a different way as she is an islander who’s home is in danger because of climate change. By informing the audience of her past as a climate activist and as an islander, her words have more impact as she is more reliable as a speaker.

Pathos: Selina Leem exhibits pathos in her speech by drawing the attention on how the climate crisis had brought danger the people of Marshall Islands. She explains how sea levels have increased, floods, droughts, and erosion are issues her people have encountered due to climate change. She draws sympathy from the audience by explaning more into detail how vegetation has gone bad and their home is slowly being taken from them because of the climate crisis.

Logos: Selina Leem explains climate change causing sea levels to rise and islands to break apart.and earth’s climate system will be invariably damaged. However, human activities, especially since the industrial revolution are the main cause of climate change characterized by global warming. She speaks with such logical reasoning to make the audience pay attention to this topic.

An inspiring basketball match

In our daily life, everyone has meaningful things that significant to them. For me, the most the important thing was a basketball match, which leaves me deep impression. This event was happened in my last year of the high school. This match is between the school. Gone through that matter, I seem to grow up a lot, because failure also can made me work harder.

individual task:

I agreed the Yuting Zhong’s reply, she states that Pengfei Song still can get excellent academic performance although even though he under the poor study condition.because there was no good technology for studying and no money can support Pengfei for school.  By reading this post, I realized that study hard is shortcut to success, which can also make the national economy develop.

Roe vs. Wade was overturned by the supreme court of justice. Their argument is that abortions are no longer protected by constitutional rights. This over turn that the supreme court approved of gives every state their own individual power to decide wether or not abortions are legal in their state. The argument’s purpose is to inform the audience about the new decision of the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. We’ve come to the conclusion that this is a forensic argument. We can also assume it’s a deliberative argument because they’re changing the policy for the near future regarding how each state has their own power to view abortions . The argument’s purpose has been achieved because they informed the audience on what Roe v. Wade and the overturn is. They came up with key facts to open up the article to show what Justices think as well as the final decision of it. We also are informed about both sides of the justices, due to the 5-4 ruling we read about the majorities mindset versus the minorities mindset.
