September 1st: Op-ed Article

After reading Gabriella’s post, I realized we were both shocked by some of the points made in the article. First, Song was born during the one-child policy in China and was born in his uncle’s house so that his mother would not be forced to have an abortion. It shocks someone to learn about a story of someone who lived through history we learn about today. She later goes on to talk about he excelled in English. He felt as though he was the best in class and that his own English teacher disliked him for always participating in class. It amazes me how a teacher would dislike a student for being an active participant in the class. Especially since I live in a time where students are called on due to the lack of participation.

Furthermore, we learn more about how even with Song’s upbringing, he was still able to go to college in the US to further his educational career. Gabriela ended the article by stating that she liked it and believed it was informative. After reading the article, I felt I was transported throughout Song’s life journey. It was a fascinating article that I would recommend to others.

In the article “Why Do Women in Their 40’s Love Harry Styles So Much,” Michelle Ruiz, a 44 year old mother, argues that being a Harry Styles fan allows them to go back to their younger years. This is a ceremonial argument because it discusses a present argument that is going on in pop culture. Due to being married and having children, she feels as though being a Styles fan has fed into who she is and who she is trying to be. Harry Styles being a former member of One Direction has a very large following of the younger generation. This argument is directed towards the younger generation who may not approve of these older women joining in on the Harry Styles fandom. While the argument was successfully communicated through the article, younger fans may have an issue with these women purchasing tickets and raising the price in demand for his shows.
