October 26th- In class writing

I read Henry’s response.

We both highlighted how Grandma Wong is very direct. I like how we both chose to talk about this. I made this into my view of the argument, but Henry just mentioned it.

A big difference is our view on the argument. Neither of us are very decisive in saying what the argument is, but Henry said it is different backgrounds should not get in the way of connecting with people. I said the argument is you should be direct like Grandma Wong. I think Henry is closer to the real argument because his is a theme throughout the essay and mine is shown only a few times.

We both talked about the Janjaweed in slightly different ways. He mentioned how Grandma Wong gave Mrs. Faith a cleaver to “protect” herself from the Janjaweed. I talked about how the experiences with the Janjaweed affected Mrs. Faith.

The big difference between this essay and a traditional one is that it is more story-telling to make an argument. It seems less formal, but this makes it effective. Grandma Wong’s examples have a meaning on the surface and a deeper meaning. A traditional essay would reference these examples and analyze them. However, this essay lets the reader digest them. A noticeable feature is that the argument is not explicitly stated. Though the reader will figure out the general argument. When I was reading it, I could not pinpoint the exact argument. After reading it over a few times I knew it had to do with differences in culture and I had a general idea.

Free Writing Essay Three:

Some ideas that came to mind.

  • Make Physical Education mandatory in school
  • More resources for non-English speaking students in High School
  • Implement a program where schools can serve lunch on the weekends for needy students

For the Physical education one. I am passionate about fitness because I am a runner and an athlete. I have had years of playing sports and working out, so I think I have some authority on the subject. My old school cut down on PE because of budget problems, and I think that is a mistake. Physical education has many perks which I will research and show. The USA is not a very healthy country and (I will try to research this) I believe it starts when kids are young. I am sure that unhealthy eating is a massive reason, but lackluster exercising has a big effect as well. My idea is to implement mandatory Physical education through Elementary, Middle, and High school. Kids should start exercising to keep themselves healthier and avoid future health problems. I want to appeal to parents who have kids because they are the people who can make an impact on this. Probably 20-40 year old parents because that’s when kids will be in school. Since this is my audience, I need to appeal to them. I will try to find a personal story that shows why PE is very helpful (probably a news article), and this will be an appeal to pathos. Another source is one that explains the future medical costs of health issues. It is important to be healthy early on to not let health issues develop, like obesity and diabetes. Showing the future medical costs if their kids have these issues will be logical for parents who are not swayed by an emotional story. I will use my personal experiences as an athlete to establish authority on the subject. I will look up the costs of PE and try to explain why it is worthwhile to have these classes. IMO, PE is just as important as classes that educate you. Because you are getting educated on how to be more healthy and to prevent future health issues. What’s the point of learning all this knowledge if you die in your 40s of a heart attack. An early foundation in physical education will set healthy habits and mindsets in kids before they get into their adult life. I will probably lead off showing statistics of diabetes, etc in the USA to emphasize the issue. Addressing the counter argument is going to be addressing the budget issues. Why should schools take money from other resources for PE (because additional funding isn’t happenign thanks to our lovely government hating education).
