The newly established annual Alvin H. Baum, Jr. Memorial Lecture highlights an outstanding LGBTQ+ Jewish social justice activist. This event preserves the legacy of Alvin H. Baum, Jr. (1930-2021), a monumental Bay Area figure who fought passionately for the inclusion of LGBTQ+ people in the Jewish community and beyond. A lawyer, urban planner, social worker, and strategic philanthropist, Mr. Baum was a pillar in the Jewish, civil rights, and gay communities. The inaugural lecture was delivered by Dr. Marcy Adelman, a stalwart activist in the Bay Area LGBTQ+ community and co-founder and visionary of Openhouse. Through her entire career, she has worked to center the voices and experiences of older LGBTQ+ adults in all aspects of life, and is a leading advocate for quality LGBTQ+ elder care and policies that safeguard equal treatment. This lecture series also honors Rabbi Camille Angel, the first LGBTQ+ rabbi-in-residence at a Catholic university in the United States. Rabbi Angel provided significant pastoral support to Mr. Baum and the late Cheryl Lazar. Their spouses, Robert Holgate and Pam David, have helped organize this lecture series in their beloveds’ and the rabbi’s honor. This is a video of the pre-event reception.
