October 14th: Social Media site evaluation

Link (It is the Mental Health post. It would not let me only link the post)

I am looking at an Instagram post from Cristiano Ronaldo regarding World Mental Health Day. He is a world famous soccer player and I believe has the most followers on Instagram. The actual post has him standing with a serious expression on his face. He is wearing a shirt that says “#LETSGETSTRONGERTOGETHER” and there is two hands fist bumping under the hashtag. In the top right it says World Mental Health Day. The caption includes a challenge to make your own post and tag three people who have helped you through difficult times with the “Let’s Get Stronger Together” message to spread mental health awareness.

The post makes readers believe he supports and has authority on mental health. While he is not a professional who specializes in mental health, he is spreading awareness about the issue which builds his credibility on the subject. The post shows him as someone who is supportive and wanting to help deal with mental health issues. The saying “Let’s Get Stronger Together” is repeated throughout to emphasize the importance of other people when dealing with mental health issues. The message builds his credibility because it is a mental health hashtag and it is correlated with him. The post makes him very trustworthy because he is a world famous athlete who is spreading awareness.

The obvious flaw is that he has no professional experience on the subject and he does not mention any personal struggles with mental health. This hurts his credibility, but he uses his fame to overcome this. He is appearing serious and supportive to appear trustworthy to the audience. His facial expression shows he is taking the issue seriously. The little challenge of posting to spread awareness builds credibility because his goal is to spread awareness surrounding mental health, and he invites the audience to join him in spreading awareness.
