Another day, another new category of post! My idea behind “Internship Ideas” is to profile students who currently have internships that they really like, and have them share information about their internship, such as how they found it, what they are learning, advice they would give, etc. I chose to profile junior Ishtar Schneider because she currently has an internship that she really enjoys and that nicely matches her passion for fashion (an interest that I know many of you share)! Ishtar is currently a Fashion Consulting Intern at “Urban Darling.” My Internship Ideas posts will take the form of a Q & A. Here goes…
Q: What is “Urban Darling”?
Ishtar: “Urban Darling is a fashion consulting firm here in San Francisco. We specialize in closet audits, personal shopping, and finding/communicating fashion insights and deals through our facebook, twitter, and blog posts. We also have “darling club”: members who are local boutiques who offer discounts to our stylists’ clients.”
Q: How did you find this internship?
Ishtar: “Surprisingly, on cragislist!”
Q: Why did you choose to intern there?
Ishtar: “Because it is SO hard to find a good fashion related internship in a city (not LA or NYC), especially SF because there are so many tech based companies. I realized it was a unique and rare opportunity so I jumped at the chance to participate!”
Q: What do you do on a regular basis at your internship?
Ishtar: “I update facebook and twitter accounts, blog 2x per week for the website, handle any PR issues that are handed to me, canvas for potential darling club members, interview boutique owners for blogs, upload blogs on official UD website, help out with any shows or events going on that are UD presented or sponsored and shadow a stylist.”
Q: What have you learned from this internship?
Ishtar: “So much! Honestly, I didn’t know very much about the day-to-day of a stylist and so I’ve taken away a lot of information about the good and bad sides to this industry. I also learned to be as positive as you can because bosses and employers can sense when you’re passionate about something and will hand over more responsibilities and fun projects to you that way.”
Q: What advice do you have for other students looking for an internship?
Ishtar: “Make it worth your time. Volunteer to help at events or with projects even if they aren’t assigned to you. An internship is rewarding as long as you put 100% into it and really give it your all. Having one that you are really passionate about helps too!”

Speaking of… Ishtar… If you haven’t already seen her full-page COLOR spread in the USF magazine… go here:

You can download a pdf of the magazine and she’s on the 2nd to last page. A little highlight about her earning the Malcewicz Endowed Scholarship, being a University Scholar, and of course, being a fabulous Comm Studies major and Lambda Pi Eta member! Congrats again Ishtar!
