Alumni Spotlight #8: Jessie Rhodes, '08

Today’s “Alumni Spotlight” falls onto 2008 graduate Jessie Rhodes.  Note: If you are a current student looking for an internship, you are going to want to keep reading this post straight through to the end.  I promise!

Jessie currently works as the Executive Assistant to the Director of the San Francisco Education Fund.  In addition to working as the Executive Assistant, Jessie also works on the Development/Fundraising Team.  Let’s catch up!

The San Francisco Education Fund (www.sfedfund.org) is dedicated to improving student success in San Francisco public schools.  They utilize a variety of approaches to make sure that students are college ready, career ready, and ready for their civic responsibilities.  Jessie’s position as Executive Assistant requires her to manage calendars, travel arrangements, expense reports, and draft letters and memos on behalf of the Director.  The biggest responsibility is managing the Board of Directors: scheduling their meetings, collecting membership dues, and updating materials.  In her role as a Development/Fundraising team member, she helps plan major fundraising events as well as smaller networking events.

According to Jessie, what she most enjoys about her job is working with the Board of Directors.  ” We have a large Board (30 members) and I enjoying getting to know each of them and learning about their careers.”  I asked Jessie how her Communication Studies degree helps with her work.  Here’s what she said: “My job is heavy on writing and I think that my major in Communication Studies and my minor in Public Relations both demanded a good chunk of writing.  My exposure to writing has made me a confident writer.  I credit my writing skills to a combination of things: my experience as Copy Editor at The Foghorn, my professors taking the time to review my writing in 1:1 meetings, and the sheer amount of writing USF asked of me.”

Good news to any current student looking for an internship (like maybe those of you signed up for the Communication Studies Internship course for the spring)… there are three internships available at the San Francisco Education Fund, including a Communication internship, Volunteer Engagement internship, and Development/Administration internship.  Jessie was nice enough to pass these on… thanks Jessie!  You can find all of the details here:  SF Education Fund internships posting

Congratulations to Jessie on her position!
