Today’s Alumni Spotlight shines like the Arizona sunset onto 2007 Communication Studies graduate Katherine Lloyd. And before we get too far, don’t go frantically searching through the Alumni Spotlights looking for #13. No, you didn’t miss one. You know how most hotels don’t have a 13th floor? I followed suit and decided not to have an Alumni Spotlight #13. (Anyone else superstitious out there?). Now, back to Katherine…
Katherine spent a year after graduation working at a San Francisco advertising agency before she headed back to school and earned her Master’s in Communication Studies from the University of Montana. I asked Katherine about her time at UM: “The two years I spent at the University of Montana were both challenging and fun. I formed great friendships and was able to explore, in depth, the areas of Communication I had found interesting during my undergraduate studies. Earning my advanced degree also allowed me to land my current job as a Hospital Administrator for the Department of Veteran Affairs. The interview panel I faced when applying for my job was impressed with my degrees and explained the strong need for communication professionals in health care. After working in this industry for 7 months I feel that my background in Communication Studies has had an impact on my ability to work with patients and other health care professionals. I enjoy what I do and I am very pleased with my decision to pursue both of my degrees as they continue to pay off for me and my career.”
Katherine currently works in the Prosthetics Department of the VA Medical Center in Phoenix, AZ where she serves as a Technical Career Field Intern. There she is being trained for the next two years on how to lead and manage a Prosthetic Department for the Department of Veteran’s Affairs. In her position, Katherine does everything from helping plan the budget to counselling employees on human resources issues. At the end of her training, Katherine will be placed at a medical center where there is a need for management personnel.
Congratulations, Katherine, on your position! It is so wonderful to hear about your success! Isn’t it fun to see what our alums are up to? See how many things you can do with a Communication Studies degree?
Congrats Katherine!!!
Katherine is living proof that you can go off and move away from the West Coast for graduate school, survive, and enjoy it! Good job Katherine!
