New Student Chronicles, Ch. 1: Victor Valle

Ahem. Drum roll please. I am really happy to announce the return of The New Student Chronicles! This semester we have several new Communication Studies students who have agreed to blog about their first semester here at USF for us. Isn’t that nice of them? First up is new student Victor Valle!

“Hey, my name is Victor Valle and I am a freshman at University of San Francisco. I come from a suburb called West Covina just outside of Los Angeles, and I am a city kid at heart. Music, drawing, writing, photography, and videography – all these creative activities make up my life and everything that goes on within it. I am a supporter – as well as a contributor – to creativity in every form.  I enjoy exploring and trying new things, but I also love staying indoors and reading or listening to some vinyl. I enjoy sports, outdoors, and merely living life to the fullest. I am also a firm believer in doing everything I do with passion. So who am I? I’m an enthusiast, a dreamer, a hardworking student, but most importantly, a student starting an entirely new chapter in my book of life. I’m a guy exploring my own uncharted territory.

Victor, smiling because he is a new Communication Studies major at USF!

It’s weird to sit here and write about a school I feel so fresh to, a school in which I have barely started growing accustomed to. However, University of San Francisco is a school that welcomes people like me, people who are fresh and new and who are adapting to the whole college and dorm experience. The campus, although undertaking a considerable amount of renovation, has become a haven for me. My friends reside here, my classes are located here, and my food is a short distance away. This is all new, but I love it all so much.

Upon first meeting the staff of the Communication Studies department, I was instantly flushed with an immense amount of good vibes and tireless staff. It was apparent to me from the first day that the advisors and professors from the COMS department would be there for me whenever I needed them (this has also been proven through the extremely speedy responses and availability from my advisor, Professor DeLaure). This school has so far lived up to all it showed me back in the day when I came here for my first campus tour: the tools and assistance are all available to students and at our convenience.

This semester I really hope to get a good deal of my core credits done so I can start to pursue more into the Communication Studies major, along with hopefully pursuing a minor in something similar to my passions: media, music, or psychology.

But enough about the school, let’s talk a bit about another great benefit of coming to University of San Francisco… the city.

We are nested in the middle of a huge metropolis, and by walking out and grabbing any bus it is vividly apparent that the possibilities are endless.

A bus ride with a couple of new friends and you can head off into a plethora of diverse cultures and mixed personalities. I am in love with the city.

Along with the fun of being in the center of a city, I’ve developed a good amount of friends (and always hoping for more, I love meeting people!) who have similar passions as I do. This erupted into guitar playing, rapping, singing and music making in my dorm room.

While I still miss my old home, I’m slowly but surely adapting to this new idea of home. My friends, family, and my loved ones might all reside back in my suburban town, but close ties will always be kept and connection will never be lost. I miss it all, but I love it here.

So in the midst of this ongoing story of my first couple of weeks here, what’s gone on? I’ve got to make new friends (including my roommate, most if not all of the 7th floor in Hayes Healy, and many others), I’ve grown independently, and I’ve explored a city (which has tons more of exploring to be done) which I utterly love.

I think I can get used to this.”

Thanks, Victor, for sharing your first few weeks here! Welcome to the Communication Studies Department, to USF, and to San Francisco! We’ll check in with Victor again later in the semester.

If you have any advice for our new students about the department, USF, or the city, comment back!

  1. Awesome job blogging your introduction to college and giving folks a sense of what you’re all about! Not the same in WC without you, but it’ll be super fun hearing what you’re up to at USF. Peace, Victor!
