New Student Chronicles, Ch. 1: Emily Koh

Our second entry in the “New Student Chronicles” comes from first year Communication Studies major Emily Koh, who has agreed to document her first semester here at USF for us! Here we go…

“My name is Emily Koh and I am a Communication Studies major and Media Studies minor.  My first impressions of San Francisco have dated all the way back to the age of five, when my family started the tradition of spending Christmas holidays in San Francisco with my cousins. However, my first steps on the USF campus are far different than the eager steps to the Christmas tree.

My first obstacle was of course, Cardiac Hill. Now it’s not so easy for a girl whose whole life was full of sandy beaches and most importantly, flat pavements. It is a dreaded hill for many, but for me it foreshadowed my career here at USF. I knew at this moment that nothing comes easy and if you continue to persevere you will find yourself at the top of the hill, basking in all your glory. Your calves may hate you and you may regret why you ever thought heels were appropriate in San Francisco but you still can’t wipe the grin off your face.

So here I am, back at the bottom of the totem pole, challenging myself to confront any hill no matter how steep. I anxiously await the next four years I’m about to embark, and it thrills every bone in my body. However, even with the excitement of the new year, new campus, and new people I feel like a once married woman put back into the dating world. Making new friends, establishing a name for myself, and navigating my way through a city all seem like foreign concepts I’ve long forgotten. How will I turn out you ask?  I’ll let you know when my calves are twice as big.”

Thanks, Emily, and welcome to USF and the department! We hope you enjoy your time here!

We’ll check in with Emily again at mid-semester.
