Alumna Sascha Rosemond and How She is Giving Back to the USF Community

By: Gloria Ruiz, Senior Communication Studies Major

Today’s “Alumni Spotlight” shines on a 2015 communication studies graduate, Sascha Rosemond, who, after venturing out, eventually found her way back to USF. She is now a program assistant for the development office and loves every minute of it. Now let’s catch up with Sascha!

After graduating USF, Sascha knew she wanted to dedicate her life to helping others. The idea that “USF gives you the options to work in fields often not thought of” and her goals drove her to join the Jesuit Volunteer Corps (JVC) Northwest right after graduation. This enabled her to move to Oregon to work as a K-12 Social Services coordinator and assist with after school programs. After her time with the JVC ended, her passion of giving back still remained and is what motivated her to, as she said, “come full circle” to USF, the place that helped instill those values in her. Currently serving as the program assistant in the development office, Sascha works on several projects to keep in touch with donors and helps USF with annual-giving efforts.

When asked how the major has helped her since graduation, she said, “the communication studies (COMS) department helped hold me to a higher standard of writing, be able to understand what people want or need and, overall, helped me become a better person.” (And as a COMS student myself – I definitely agree!) She continued, “even with the written stuff around us, I can read something and be able to analyze it now because of my COMS classes.” Some of her favorite communication studies classes were Family Communication and Nonverbal Communication; she even said a class named Pondering Paradise changed her life!

Sascha expressed not only her love for the major but for USF in general. “The university’s mission and values are so close to my own,” she described when discussing why it was so important for her to come back here. This is a place that helped her grow as a student, guided her to the places she wanted to go, and aided in helping her become the amazing person she is today; this is why it was so important for her to come back and serve the USF community once again.

When asked what advice she has for graduating communication studies students her answer was very heartwarming. “Do whatever you want! Follow your gut or whatever organ makes you comfortable [to trust] and do what you want.” She continues this sentiment by explaining that only we know what we want and love, so we should listen to ourselves. She did just this and hasn’t looked back. Her last piece of advice on how to maneuver through this sometimes tough world is, “give yourself to our world, live USF’s mission and don’t forget the gentleness of the Jesuit ideology.”

Thank you so much, Sascha, for taking the time to speak about your experiences with the communication studies major and USF in general! Good luck to you on all future endeavors, and here’s to hopefully seeing you around campus! 🙂
